What draws people to the religion of voodoo?

Like @RayofLight says, it could be cultural for some. For some in Haiti who may be in poverty, it could even be seen as a method to survival. When you've done all you can and its still not enough, one might turn to magic.

I've never practiced Vodou myself, but a few of the lwa seem quite lovable. I have a soft spot in my heart for Papa Legba.

Many things could but one reason may be to connect with culture since its a closed practice.

It is a closed practice, but one can make their way into it. It can be, however, quite costly, monetarily speaking, as you have to find a group willing to initiate you, and travel to them(and they certainly won't do it for free).

Maybe the possibility to torture their bosses from remote with a needle and a doll.

I read that that particular 'magic trick' actually came from European magic. The 'voodoo doll' as per actual Voodoo is, from what I understand, an entirely different concept(which seems to mostly involve impressing specific qualities or purposes on a doll for some kind of gain or protection).

Those European witches were a real pain ;-)

I have a much removed ancestor Anne Whittle, of Pendle witches fame. Maybe it runs in the blood

It has to do with the development of higher human potential using the old instinctive pathways within the brain. This practice is not condoned in many Western Religions, not because it does not work, but because these modern religions, by comparison, teach one to use a different set of neural subroutines, which are more modern. Voodoo uses subroutines connected to the body and natural and unnatural instinct, while higher religions use subroutines connected to emotions and intellect; holy spirit.

In the West, Voodoo is still practiced in places like New Orleans and many Islands in the Caribbean. It appears to have evolved from the African slaves. These ancient tribal cultures were more in touch with instinct and they developed technique to tap into this.

These two hubs of Voodoo, were settled by the French and Spanish, respectively, which were both Catholic Countries. The Catholic Church had a tradition, that dated back to it's early beginning with Rome, of allowing converted peoples to maintain their cultural traditions. Voodoo was part of the tradition in these places. It was not condoned, but it was tolerated to make conversion easier.

In the North, where the English mostly settled, voodoo was much less common, since the teaching of the Church of England was less tolerant. The Louisiana Purchase, which America bought from Napoleon and France, which included the metropolitan French City of New Orleans, introduced voodoo to America, which was more tolerant by its own Declaration. It is still practiced to this day.

It's ignorance of how much better and higher the sustenance of God is and power from God is through his chosen ones compared to that of misguiding Jinn and magic from corrupted energy.

Had they known the truth in this regard and believed and guarded - they would learn magical abilities from the proper avenues and would have awakened their inner sword which can cut down by God's permission the dark sorcery and dark forces.

Not all sorcerers are malicious, a lot are just simply lost, like the sorcerers who realizing the power of Moses and Aaron being from God, submitted to them realizing they were directly sustained and given those miracles.

Vodou's primary focus is on God. If they practice sorcery, they are considered a bokor. Most Vodousaints are Catholic.
