Republican Governors Pay Anti-Vaxers To Quit Jobs

Red States Are Now Paying Unemployment Benefits to Anti-Vaxxers Who Quit Their Jobs
Excerpted....
On Oct. 20, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds announced a crackdown on unemployment benefits. She required recipients to double their job search activity, and she imposed strict audits—with the threat of cutting off payments to anyone who fell short—to ensure that “no Iowan who is receiving unemployment benefits unnecessarily remains on the sidelines” of the job market.

Nine days later, however, Reynolds signed legislation that pays vaccine refusers to do just that: sit on the sidelines. Under the new law, anyone “discharged from employment for refusing to receive a vaccination against COVID-19 … shall not be disqualified for benefits.”
Reynolds is one of many Republican politicians who openly advocate, and in some states have successfully imposed, a two-tiered system of unemployment insurance. It’s not a left-wing policy of money for everyone or a right-wing policy of money for no one. It’s a policy of pernicious hypocrisy: welfare for vaccine refusers, tough love for everyone else.

I would be more preoccupied with those people who start having convulsions unless they gain their daily million of dollars.
I guess they are Christian and they changed
the Our Father accordingly.

I guess that each state of the Union has the right to decide their welfare policy.
Also because it deals with borderless territories with a minuscule population (speaking of Iowa).

Sure, I suppose people feel the inequity of unemployment benefits are free to move to states where all face the same tough-love.

Hypocrisy of politicians, OMG!
Or is it the hypocrisy of the folks who vote them into office?

Who gets the benefits becomes the politics.

Just goes to show that Republicans never really believed all that rhetoric about unemployment making people lazy and dependent on the gov't.

Well.....I'm sure they still think that's the case for....um....."those people". But not their own base.

It's not hypocrisy. It's just making sure they have the same opportunity as others. What so called liberals want is to make the unvaccinated (not even necessarily real anti-vaxxers) into second class citizens with no rights.

How is it "quitting" your job if you get fired because you don't want to take a forced jab?

It’s not hypocrisy. They want unemployed people who are receiving benefits to search harder for a job and begin making something of themselves... while also giving the same benefits to people who lost their job simply because they weren’t vaccinated, until they can find work again.

I didn't claim hypocrisy. But I do mock & oppose
such spendy preferential treatment for people
who'd take unemployment checks rather than take
reasonable safety measures required by employers.
It's ironic that Republicans are the give-away artists.

Getting the shot or not is a choice.
Choices have consequences.
Refusing vaccination is choosing...
- Lose the job.
- Greater risk of severe Covid 19 effects, eg, hospitalization, death.
- Greater risk of infecting others (cuz of longer duration of infection compared to vaccinated people).

Government shouldn't subsidize bad choices.
Instead of being paid to be unemployed, they should get
one of the many jobs available without vax requirement.

Um.....yes it is. Republicans opposed extending or expanding unemployment benefits provided during the COVID pandemic because (according to them) the benefits were making people lazy and unwilling to work, as they could just live off the gov't instead of working. I trust you're familiar with all their rhetoric about that.

Yet here they are doing the opposite, i.e., supporting expansion of unemployment benefits. IMO, it' s rather obvious that the reason they're supporting it this time around is because they know the majority of anti-vaxxers are Republican voters.

IOW, it's just as I said....they're just fine with their people getting expanded unemployment benefits, but oppose the same for "others".

If they truly believed their own rhetoric they would oppose giving anti-vaxxers special unemployment benefits out of fear that people will exploit it just so they don't have to work. So why don't they? Because it's their base, and everyone knows it's not good honest conservatives who leech of gov't entitlements.....right?

Unemployment benefits are intended to be temporary. Unvaccinated people who lose their jobs will be able get some small amount until they find another job. Meanwhile, people who think they can live indefinitely off of unemployment benefits forever- vaccinated and unvaccinated alike- are encouraged to get out and make some money on their own.

That is not hypocrisy.

That's the same for everyone, not just anti-vaxxers. Yet Republicans assume their base will immediately look for work, while assuming that "others" won't.

You're making my point for me. Your contrast assumes anti-vaxxers won't exploit unemployment while "others" will.

That is not hypocrisy.
That's exactly what it is.

It is not. Healthy people regardless of their political affiliation/ race/ sex/ vaccination status/ etc are encouraged to find work and make money for themselves instead of living off unemployment benefits forever.

And for the record... I am not arguing that it is “right” or “wrong” to be unemployed by choice. Sometimes people need some time to get their head in the right place, get their life together, or to destress, or spend time doing something more important to them. None of that is “right” or “wrong”. My only argument was that I do not find it hypocritical for the GOP to extend unemployment benefits to those let go from their jobs due to their vaccination status, while at the same time encouraging people to go out and make some money of their own.

Given that no one was proposing "unemployment benefits forever for any reason", the above is based on a strawman and as such is meaningless.

Then you're missing the point. Republicans claimed that we shouldn't extend or expand unemployment benefits because it incentivizes people to not work and just live of gov't money. Yet now they're expanding unemployment benefits to anti-vaxxers with no concern at all about them not working and living of gov't money.

If you don't see the hypocrisy there, I can't help you.

I would not say there is “no concern at all”. Why would there not be? They continue to encourage people to find work. What is the reasoning behind forbidding unemployment benefits for unvaccinated people who lost their jobs over their vaccination status?

Then please show where Republicans expressed the same angst over expanding unemployment benefits to anti-vaxxers as they did with everyone else.

And the reason for not providing unemployment to anti-vaxxers is that they are out of work because they refuse to follow health and safety rules. It's no different than if a construction worker quits because he refuses to wear a hardhat at job sites.

It's coercion. Not much of a choice. These governors rightly see this as federal government over reach so they want to protect people from it.

The last part you said is debatable by the way. When you have the vaccine you can be covid positive and not even realize it because it often takes longer for symptoms to arise; that's more opportunity for you to spread the virus in the meantime and without knowing it. People without the vaccine tend to get sick quickly and so they are likely to stay home and self quarantine faster than the vaccinated.

I prefer minimum coercion. As an employer & landlord,
I want to run my business as I see fit, which includes
safety measures. So my coercion of workers & tenants
is balanced against their posing an unacceptable danger,
& against government coercing me into that unacceptable
danger. Keep government out....let businesses, workers,
& customers each make choices for themselves. Any
who don't want to interact with the others may disengage.

I'm reasoning based upon info from
Johns Hopkins, & stand by my views.

I don't think "liberals" want that. I think they want to incentivize doing what is best for community health.

The attitude of the right is that the government can't tell them what to do. It is so strong that they don't give a rat's azz about their neighbor's safety as long as they can stand up to The Man.
