Indoor Fiascos

The other week, I was taking a shower and enjoying the warm water without paying much attention to anything else. After about 15 minutes, I realized the drain was blocked, leading water to build up on the floor and pass over the doorstep all the way out to the reception.

This caused puddles to form under the fridge and freezer as well as soak a couple of carpets, which needed to be line-dried for nearly a day after.

What are some of your indoor fiascos?

I have the shower water really hot and everyone complains it steams up.

Isn't that the point??

Everything. Everything in my house is an indoor fiasco.

A pipe burst in the basement recently. Water all over.

The guy working on the bathroom decided he didn't like the way P traps look, so he stuck it in the wall. We complained for weeks that the bathroom smelled like **** before he correctly installed the P trap, under the sink where it belongs. He also installed 'fun' color flashing things on the faucet for the sink and the tub without permission, which about knocked my epileptic friend out.

We had a fish tank filter get turned back slightly, and, through a small hole from a nail, loaded the wall and paint full of pockets of water, which leaked into the air vent.

Awhile back, Ares decided he wanted a new floor, and ripped seven of his floor boards off with his bare hands before we were able to stop him. After nailing them down, I convinced him to paint them green instead of trying to install new floor.

The contractor who installed the sliding glass door decided he was done, leaving exposed 2 by 4s in the wall, and gaps for critters to come in. We finally convinced him to cover that, which he did a half *** job, didn't apply trim, and left uneven layers of wall mud.

What is actually under floorboards??

A cheaper floor, which is typically unsightly, called the subfloor. You can still walk around on it, but it feels a bit weak. Under that, there's big support beams which that is laid on. And under those boards is the ceiling to the floor underneath.

Thanks for alleviating my 'what if the floor collapses because of all my books' fear. It has actually been bothering me.

How badly can someone screw up their job before you can actually file a complaint and get some compensation over there? That sounds horrible.

It would take a lot for that. :) I have a few fish tanks, and they don't go through the floor, but sometimes cause worry. (75 gallon tank=850 lbs of water, plus sand/stone)

We could file a complaint, but that would be huge headache and we'd likely not get anything for it.

I didn't want any of this crap done in the first place, which adds some insult to injury.

It seems to be a shower themed thread so.

A few months ago our shower tap (faucet) developed a leak which slowly got worse. It leaked inside the shower cubicle so no real biggie but it was annoying.

We called a few of plumbers who couldn't give us a date or simply refused the job of replacing the tap.

So hubby, full of confidence said "i can do that, how hard can it be?"

We purchased a new tap, turned off the water supply man (and woman) handled the cubicle away from the wall. Hubby undid the pipes, removed the tap, fitted the new tap, checked for leaks and man (and woman) handled the cubical back i to place... Job done.

A couple of weeks later we developed of yellow patch on the outside of the bathroom wall. Hmmm. Man and woman handled the shower away from the wall... The wall and floor are soaking wet. When tightening up the joints one of the flexible pipes kinked and later gave way to spray a constant fine mist onto the wall.

Fixed it properly now.

I hope the repairs to the area weren't too extensive?

I've fallen through a floor. Less exciting than it sounds.
(Water pipes had been leaking over time, without our knowledge)

On occasion when I'm inattentive starting up
the woodstove, cold air will come down the
flue. Smoke gets into me shack. Yuck.

I had a pipe leading to a shower bust once, flooding the adjacent room and ruining a bunch of stuff.
I had another pipe under the house bust. The text alert on my phone at the time was Nelson from the Simpsons doing his "haw-haw!" I get under my house, repair the pipe, go back inside and slowly turn the water. Everything sounds fine so I keep gradually increasing the pressure. I get it all the way back on, waited a few seconds, decided it's fine. Then I hear the pipe burst again, shortly follower by "haw-haw!" (My dad texted to ask how the repair went)
I was in bed once when a nasty gust of wind came through and blew the glass of the window in. I don't think I've had a more frightening awakening.
Indoor/outdoor fiasco when I was no older than two or three, I was my grandpas house while my dad and brother helped him do work to his porch. They pulled it out away from the house early on several inches, I don't know why. But hours later I forgot and ran out the door and fell through the gap and bashed my two front teeth into the porch.
Years later, same house after my grandfather passed and it became my grandmother's house, my oldest nephew who was about a year or two older than me used to stick his tongue out all the time. He did it then and tripped and nearly bit his tongue off.

Can you explain how this wasn't exciting?

Floor didn't collapse in any sort of spectacular fashion. One foot went straight through the floor, and I ended up stuck with one leg through the floor (only).

If it was a movie, the whole floor would have collapsed, and I would have ended up clutching precariously to the side of a cliff.

Was your leg alright?
