The self learning swarm is here and it's going to get even smarter..

Europeans propose siccing self-learning drone swarms on air defenses

A new age of self learning tech used for military use is here. I don't think this is going to be stopped anymore, and will be used in future wars and population control.

I can see why AI is worse than nuclear weapons. It's potentially lethal and almost impossible to kill.

I hate to sound like Elon Musk, but this stuff is fascinating and terrifying at the same time.

I'm now a firm supporter of the Fermi Paradox that technology will eventually kill us.

Agree or disagree? Thoughts on the subject , pro and con,, are definitely welcome.

Fully agree with you on this.
AI is unsafe to be created by man.

Unfortunately yes, AI seems to be put in everywhere from refrigerator to weapons

I wouldn't say "unfortunately": when used right, AI has benefits that make it far too useful and helpful of a tool to simply avoid using altogether. However, I agree with the view that use of AI should be regulated by international laws just like nuclear weapons are. In the wrong hands or in the wrong circumstances, it could be catastrophic for humanity.

I highly recommend this article to those wanting a glimpse into how some of the leading experts in the field view the dilemma of widely using AI and balancing its benefits and risks:

I may have mention it before in some discussion, but I do not trust AI technology or objects that are made to " be the new humans"
If I buy a car ( probably next year) I will ask them to not install AI driver technology because I don't want it as an option in my car

"Being the new humans" is too broad and vague: AI already surpasses human ability and intelligence in some fields, but it's specialized enough in those fields and has no self-awareness or goals of its own that undermine human well-being (not yet, anyway), so it doesn't cause any harms to humans beyond rendering some jobs redundant. On the other hand, as I said in my previous post, any areas where AI could prove dangerous to humans need to be governed by international laws much like how development and use of certain weapons are.

In fields like data science (which is what I'm currently planning to specialize in) and medical research, harnessing AI is an invaluable tool. Tasks that would take even the most skilled humans thousands of hours could take an AI a fraction of the time and be done without human errors like lapses in attention. I don't think we can or should throw the baby out with the bathwater and stop using AI altogether.

If I buy a car ( probably next year) I will ask them to not install AI driver technology because I don't want it as an option in my car

That's your right, of course, but as far as existential risks of AI go in their severity, I think autonomous cars are toward the bottom of the list compared to things like AI-driven drones and other militarized applications of AI.

So….we’re going to get a Terminator style future?
Is that what’s happening?

The IPCC's warnings and projections lead me to believe that climate change could drastically upend our way of life much sooner than AI would. A key difference is also that we have already seen what climate change can do and has done to many parts of the world (e.g., increased incidence of wildfires and floods), whereas the most severe risks of AI are still theoretical and haven't yet occurred in reality.

Agree.

Ever seen the Black Mirror episode Metalhead? If not, go find it, it's on Netflix. Robotic dogs that kill. Forget those dancing Boston Dynamics dogs, they're trying to lull you into a sense of complacency.

Disagree. I admit its going to kill some of us, but that is what always happens when the world changes. It always changes. You can't hide from death. We have yet to see the good AI, the potential of AI. Right now its all very stupid, so it is either a weapon or a tool. We haven't seen AI, not real AI. We haven't sent self replicating systems into space or anything cool like that.

You and I are human. We are passion bound with a little sprinkling of intelligence. We are essentially crazy. AI is passion-less. It has potential to help with complex questions such as legal questions. It can heal, plan, design great systems. We need that.

"Used for population control"? What? "Impossible to kill?" Huh?

AI is a tool like any other tool. You understand a knife more than you understand AI, and my guess is that you're filling in your ignorance with scenes from sci-fi horror movies or conspiracy websites, and working yourself up over nothing. Just like I see with the unfounded fear over GMO foods. Science fiction is fiction.

If you panic over eccentric masked serial killers murdering you every time you look at a knife, then that would be the equivalent of what you're doing with AI.

I hope it doesn't become an issue for USA's two biggest political parties. They will eradicate any sensible conversation about it.

There was quite a while ago a set of short stories about robot killers who had turned focus from the enemy to all people:

For pure kill-all-humans evil, we're better off with the Claws from Dick's 1953 short story "Second Variety." In that tale, written during the Cold War, the Claws are autonomous self-replicating robots created by the U.S. to fight the Soviets in the wake of a nuclear war that scorched the planet and reduced it to a nightmarish wasteland. The problem is that the Claws, who are anthropomorphic, do their job too well. After they kill off the Soviets, they need a new reason to exist, and thus set their sights on eliminating the Americans -- and eventually each other [source: Dick].

What's the difference to today? I see two things.
1. The AI may be much better at identifying targets than human drone pilots. (They have a, what? 5% hit rate now?)
2. It concentrates power in fewer humans. In theory, a single villain could attack multiple targets all over the world without the need of (unreliable) henchmen.
