Who determines what is an “acceptable personality”, and what constitutes as “non-mental-disorder behavior”?

Why listen to them?

Licensed mental health professionals such as psychiatrists and psychologists. We would listen to them for the same reason(s) we listen to any expert when they speak on their field of expertise.

I often discount/doubt the concept and related things in various degrees due to things like that, and even treatments so-called. But that's just my opinion.

In some cases, certain personality disorders can be dangerous not just to oneself but to others as well if left untreated. There are definitely some situations in which I believe ignoring professional treatment (if one is able to get proper help) for a personality disorder, and certain other psychiatric conditions, constitutes either an unethical action or extreme irresponsibility/carelessness toward oneself and others.

Maybe so. It seems like people are mainly concerned about the acts though and not the experience of the person. I'll find out more over time though about this subject.

I view both as crucial, but sometimes the acts can't be ignored like some people seem to think. Nobody who has access to good care should wait until they make others' lives into a nightmare before finally seeking professional help.

This isn't true at all.

The experience of the person is taken into consideration. I say that as a person who has been in many levels of therapy. And also, was recently told they have a Personality Disorder.

Yep, I've done a lot of therapy over the last several years as well. Seeking help shouldn't carry any stigma, but refusing to do so and harming others or oneself in the process should indeed be heavily discouraged.

I've considered going, not to be diagnosed for anything other than what I've got (I hate how when I see people in my life get diagnosed for something they seem to "give in" to the thing and then title it for all their existential woes, so I don't want the same to happen to me) one for, but to help with life. It's free and available (thanks Obama) but perhaps my view will change now going as an adult for myself like you have. I barely even remember what the ones I went to when I was younger said to me, so I have the impression of them just trying to bribe me with rewards and saying cheesy stuff, but maybe adult therapists are different.

Personality Disorders

Interesting, and basic run down on the various types of Personality disorders.

Interesting because most of those listed in the clusters are autism indicators, which I find interesting, being (high functioning) autistic, which is grossly misunderstood, myself. Reading from Cluster A through Cluster C, first to last is like reading a subset of autism spectrum indicators.

Hello Hammer.
Thankyou for the interesting thread.
My take on that list published by the psychos is: What a load of junk.

Before anything else, nobody has 'disorders', they only have 'disabilities'.

If you read through that list, everybody that you know or work with for or under.... fits one of those descriptions. The psychos want everybody to be their paying patients.

How does your brother's schizophrenia show itself?

I disagree, but appreciate your insight.

Exactly.......... they are no disorders, they may be disabilities and should be treated as such.

I hate words like disorder, malfunction, etc.....

A time will come when nobody will be looked upon as disordered or malfunctioning, there will simply be Abilities and Disabilities. Only then will our societies treat everybody with the same levels of respect.
