This has already gotten quite a few tongues wagging:

From Superman changes motto to 'Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow,' says DC chief

Superman is officially moving on from "the American Way." Jim Lee, chief creative officer and publisher of DC, announced on Saturday during the virtual fan event DC Fandome that the Man of Steel's motto will be "evolving" from the well-known mantra that he fights for "Truth, Justice and the American Way." Superman's new "mission statement": "Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow."

And, from New Superman comes out as bisexual in upcoming DC comic

DC Comics announced Monday, on National Coming Out Day, that the new Superman is bisexual (the new Superman is the old one's son) and will start a relationship with a man in the forthcoming issue of "Superman: Son of Kal-El," as first reported by IGN.

Unsurprisingly, conservative pundits are having none of this: A Fox News guest bizarrely suggested a bisexual Superman would get 'a venereal disease,' leaving Laura Ingraham looking baffled

When I was a kid I never read superhero comics nor do I watch any of them now with the exception being the Dark Knight movie and the only reason I watched it was for Heath Ledgers portrayal of the Joker. My first reaction is that this is a result of lazy writers in the sense that instead of coming up with an entirely new character that is LGBT they use established characters and just tweak the story a little bit to try to appeal to a PC audience but it seems they have alienated a lot of fans in the process.

I'm not sure the change is necessary as the belief in manifest destiny of the United States and in the American Dream is often so closely interwoven with the belief in the progress of the nation and in it being an example to the world. The belief in "the American Way" is a Cold War relic and perhaps could be updated, but I don't see the point of replacing it entirely as the meaning of symbols evolve and shift as it is. It boils down to why isn't the "American Way" also for a "better tomorrow" in the first place?

I personally, don't understand the necessity of making Superman bisexual, unless it really adds something to the character and to the story. But it is within the rights of writers to make that kind of change and to reinvent the idea of Superman to be more appropriate for the time. All I ask really is that it is good for story-telling and not simply to appease or flatter current trends and fashions. Done with subtlety, it may be compelling, moving and sincere. If it's just a money making scheme to re-brand, no thanks.

They have the right to change it, but it is a question of what it adds as art more than anything else for me.

One wonders what motivated the change. What else can it be other than that the American way isn't what it used to be, and doesn't look like anything to tout any more? When I think of the American way, I think unmasked people in Wal-Mart screaming at the top of their lung demanding rights they don't have and calling whatever they don't like illegal or unconstitutional. I think of police shooting black citizens in the back and kids shooting up schools. I think of insurrection, racism, and voter suppression. America just not doing very well, and the American way doesn't seem so appealing anymore. The old American way, perhaps, but that's gone, and with it, the slogan.

Were you aware of this movie from last year? Probably: Superman: Red Son Offers a Complex, Communist Man of Steel

"If you ever wrote off geography as unimportant, then Superman: Red Son might change your mind. The latest DC animated movie, based on Mark Millar’s critically acclaimed Elseworlds story, explores how different the world would be if Superman had landed in Soviet Russia instead of Smallville, Kansas. The animated movie puts a new spin on some of your favorite DC characters and explores themes of morality, nationalism and violence."

I confess I find myself in a very subtle state of grief over America's decline, even as a Brit. Its just very sad to see the nation of Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln fall in to it's current state when you deserved and were capable of so much more. It is especially so as all that was asked to make freedom sustainable was the humility and decency for people to be honest with themselves and others to keep the social contract going. :(

I wasn't actually, so I will take a look. :D I've seen the "Red Son" version of Supermen come up in various google image search results in the past when I have looked up communist stuff though.

They really should have created entirely new superheroes to fight Hitler back in the 1940s, rather than using established characters like Superman or Captain America to do so. Just look at this lazy writing by woke leftists trying to appeal to a PC audience:

I imagine they alienated a lot of Nazi readers back in the day.

Culturally avant garde artists are upsetting the entrenched conservative establishment?!?

Oh no! This has never happened before. No, it has definitely not happened in literally every era of recorded history! This is totally a unique thing right now, and it must be really uniquely bad. We will be unable to have a minor cultural shift in values and then carry on with our lives!

At this point, they're not even "avant garde" any more; this is an excerpt of what the late, great Stan Lee wrote in 1968 (from a Washington Post article, that commie rag):
“Let’s lay it right on the line,” Lee wrote in the year that the Rev. Martin Luther King and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated. “Racism and bigotry are among the deadliest social ills plaguing the world today. But, unlike a team of costumed supervillains, they can’t be halted with a punch in the snoot or a zap from a ray gun. The only way to destroy them, is to expose them — to reveal from the insidious evil they really are.”

Lee, who had served in the Army during World War II, went on to call the bigot “an unreasoning hater — one who hates blindly, fanatically, indiscriminately.”

“It’s totally irrational, patently insane to condemn an entire race — to despise an entire nation — to vilify an entire religion,” Lee’s “Soapbox” said. “Sooner or later, we must learn to judge each other on our own merits. Sooner or later, if man is ever to be worthy of his destiny, we must fill our hearts with tolerance.

“For then, and only then, will we be truly worthy of the concept that man was created in the image of God — a God who calls us all — His children.”
Just look at this woke leftist pandering to 1960s PC culture, destroying comics with his lazy writing!

I've always been a casual comics guy rather than a hardcore guy, and I'm not gonna pretend I care either way if Superman is gay, straight, bi, or whatever else.

I would care about how the emerging story is built into the existing narrative arc.
If the new Superman is suddenly revealed to be bisexual, in a medium where we commonly access characters thoughts directly...that would seem trite, and potentially virtue-signalling or marketing.

And if his motto...wherever that actually appears in the comic...suddenly just changes? Same thing. If, on the other hand, these are fully explored and fleshed out in a narrative sense, then they are fodder for some interesting content, imho.

Stupid and asinine.

Go woke, go broke.

I don't regard these people as true owners of superman lore.

They're frauds and an insult to the orginal superhero creaters.

Lois Lane is Superman's love interest lest this modern generation wreaks things even more.

What's next? Lois Lane goes transsexual?

The fact that these people paid more attention when a lgbt superman came to the page than when a Nazi superman (and a nazi captain America over at marvel) is something I find amusing.

Superhero comics have dozens of incarnations of characters, all over the spectrum. The real virtue signaling is throwing a fuss because new incarnations are for a new generation of readers.

And there's a reason why they only care when the new version is a racial minority or lgbt or a woman.

Simple solution. Make a new character. Everybody is happy.

They’re never happy. I’ve seen people get mad at She Hulk even though she’s been a character since like the 80s. And indeed was breaking the fourth wall long before Deadpool entered the scene
And okay Batwoman wasn’t great but she was an original character and people still threw massive temper tantrums
This isn’t even unique to comics. There was a gender swapped Invisible Man movie made in like the 40s ffs. The Invisible Woman was literally made as a sequel back then.
The “go woke go broke” crowd seemingly refuses to recognise long established trends in entertainment as a whole.
