I think common names prevents kids from being singled out.
It is good to have a precious, rare name.
But not that unique. And difficult to spell.
There are so many nice names out there.:)

We Never Know

Is it a cultural name?

The father is Hawaiian. "La'akea" means something like sacred light and I have no clue about "Makalapuaokalanipo".

From the web....

“La'a” means sacred, holy, consecrated while “kea” means light, and the name roughly means “sacred light” . However, the middle name “Makalapuaokalanipō” is more of a traditional name, without any direct translation to English.

Then I see no problem with it.

I would hate to be that kid in elementary school and have to spell out my middle name lol

Me too. My full name is 19 letters long, and 21 when including my suffix. Filling out forms can take a little while longer because of it. This is one reason that I would insist on giving short names to any children I might have.

Celebrities are always coming up with some rather interesting/odd names for their children..

Ronda Rousey named her daughter "La'akea Makalapuaokalanipo Browne" and calls her Po for short.

Not just celebrities.

I have an nth cousin named Ronald McDonald.

(His mother was a hippie who didn't have TV through the 60s and didn't know about the corporate clown)

Years age I knew of some people whose last name was Seed. They named all their children names like:
Sesame, Poppy, Sunflower...
I feel sorry for kids whose parents do weird things like that.
