What is a miracle?

Spirit of Light

Many people especially in religious settings speak about the miracle done by someone in the past, or even today.

But what is actually a miracle?

To me, miracles are not something supernatural :) miracles are actually something most of us experiences every day or week, But we do not see it as a miracle, because what is a miracle has become natural to humans today.

A kid survives an accident where a house falls upon the kid, that is a miracle to me.
A car runs over an elderly person, but the person survives and walks away, that is to me a miracle.

So what are miracles to you?

To me it is supernatural, basically a divine intervention into the ordinary course of nature which can be perceived by us. This idea I got from the old Catholic Encyclopedia and I think their article is accurate. But in a way I do agree with your idea of them and examples and would call all of that works of God, it is normal to us because as it says in Lamentations the mercies of the Lord "are new every morning."

It's an event that clearly and demonstrably runs contrary to well understood laws of nature and is an event that has a clear divine purpose behind it.
I am skeptical of such events.

I don't know if there is a non-religious equivalent ;) but I'd use blessings instead of miracles. Miracles I see is an meaningful and spontaneous event without any explanatory cause. A lot of events don't have causes "we" know of. It's human nature to put a cause to an unknown since we're uncomfortable with that (evolutionary thing). If not, its highlighted to a divine cause.

Blessings (or meaningful events that stimulate a sense of gratitude) would be something I experience every day (it could be seen as meaningful synchronicities given coincidences isn't an awesome term). I think religion puts context to these experiences but doesn't create them.

Is there a difference between blessing and miracle?

I would say the kid surviving the accident would be a blessing but if an invisible force safely moved the kid out of the way that may be a miracle. We can explain how the house fell and how the kid survived so it's a blessing he didn't get hurt. However, if an invisible force moved him out the way, that can't be explained and to many the divine causes would define it as a miracle.

In my opinion ;)

Miracle-A wonderful event occurring in the physical world attributed to supernatural powers.
Luck-Something that happens to someone by chance, a chance occurrence.

To me, something fortuitous that was not predictable which is attributed to supernatural influence.

I generally consider myself a lucky individual. Bad events happen but I generally end up no worse for wear.
It would seem to me, removing the supernatural component leaves one with, luck.

Like the time I was ran over on the freeway while riding a motorcycle. I was hit from behind, I went down with the motorcycle and ending up under the car. The motorcycle was totaled but saved me by propping the car up over me. I crawl out from under the car with a few minor scratches. The police offer on the scene called it a miracle. Me, I thought if I had been luckier, I wouldn't have been hit at all.

Weird idea isn't it? Something bad has to happen to you, which you happen to survive.

Miracles are magical in the surprise felt at the conclusion of the witnessed action.

The `action` that was the true cause, is seldom noticed, that's where the magic matters.

Ahhh...miracles, out of no-where, everything..... and life at times.

Looking at this from two different perspectives:

First, Clarke's law Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. A miracle from this perspective is the application of a law of the universe aka "advanced technology" that we don't understand and which thus seems impossible by what we do know.

But from another perspective, we don't see the "ordinary miracles" that are all around us. As the song goes:

It's not that unusual
When everything is beautiful
It's just another ordinary miracle today

The sky knows when it's time to snow
Don't need to teach a seed to grow
It's just another ordinary miracle today

Life is like a gift they say
Wrapped up for you everyday
Open up and find a way
To give some of your own
...

Alienistic

Anti-conformity
But what is actually a miracle?

For me, a miracle is an individual undergoing radical change in their character/nature. Learning to know oneself better. Death or dying to what is generally called as “bad ego.” Being enlightened and endarkened to see and discern the authentic natures of good and evil. Being able to acknowledge that they were wrong or incorrect about much of their ideologies and/or indoctrination’s. The strength and ability to handle Truth.

Either everything in the universe is miraculous; or nothing is. It’s all about perspective imo.

Indoor plumbing  Something tells me this dude (me) is a bit confused:p

After being without something you're used to, you appreciate it in a new light.

Whoever was able to think up the idea of indoor plumbing, and then make it possible was a miracle worker to me. (I haven't had a bathroom in a month.)

Really, there's a lot of little things... medicine and other life saving equipment also come to mind. The refrigerator, too.

Allow me to add dentistry to that list. I thank God daily, for dentists.

I’ve had a lot of trouble over the years with abscesses, which hurt like no other pain I’ve ever known. In the British Museum in Bloomsbury is the embalmed skull of an Egyptian male, thought to have been a temple priest at Karnak; recent ultra sound investigations revealed he suffered from multiple abscesses, one of which may have been the cause of death. Seeing his skull and learning this, I felt so much sympathy for a man who lived around 4000 years ago, with no access to antibiotics or effective painkillers; not sure if the ancient Egyptians practiced dental surgery, but it would have been pretty primitive.

So am I.

This definition is common, but it's got a big problem: since "laws of nature" are inferred from what actually happens, the definition implies that miracles don't happen.

Yes, that sounds about right to me.

The popularisation of the world "miracle" in modern headlines and the like has diminished the word somewhat.
So we now have "miracle shot", and "Miracle save" in sport. "Miracle baby" and "Miracle worker" - etc, etc.
