If I had to choose a religion ...

Hey folks,

technically I am not a seeker anymore, but I may have some advice for people who possibly are.

So, if I had to choose a religion or worldview, which allows me to keep my Christian background while listening to the words of Buddha and Krishna and in case I don't feel like putting all my eggs in one basket and converting to a Dharmic religion, then I would consider New Age, more specifically, a subset of New Age that deals with so-called "ascended masters". If you want to make this choice, then you may have to get used to setting your own rules with regard to religion, but if you're a Christian studying Far Eastern philosophy, you probably have to anyway. The only book in English that I know of that deals with ascended masters is Archangels and Ascended Masters by Doreen Virtue, who used to be the grande dame of esotericism but has since renounced the New Age and become a Baptist. Her books, however, are classics, and should be easily available.

Many change religions like they change their favorite socks, and never actually study any of them very deeply, and then find some rewrite they like and then go round demanding everybody other follower accept their own personal self-made fantasy version as just as valid and seriously as the real version. There is little point in discussing anything with such people, since they will be following another one next week because they ran across some writing or other they thought sounded cool.

I like the general idea but it seems to be much centred on Christianity. A base one could build on.
