CNN article depicts elaborate plan for Trump to overthrow election results

It makes a lot more sense than just seeing/hearing Trump being mad at Pence, and not knowing the reason why.

From the article...
The plan was first proposed to Pence when Eastman was with Trump in the Oval Office on January 4, during one of Trump's attempts to convince Pence that he had the authority to stop the certification of the election.
"You really need to listen to John. He's a respected constitutional scholar. Hear him out," Trump said to Pence at that meeting, Woodward and Costa write in "Peril."
Whenever I hear of more of Pence's actions I am reminded of an incident in the early days of Trump's reign.

Between the election and the inauguration, Trump had sent Flynn to meet with the Russians to assure them that the Congressionally approved sanctions would be lifted.

When news of the meeting leaked, Flynn denied it. Trump backed Flynn's denial. Trump told Pence that Flynn did nothing wrong. Pence went on all the Sunday morning talk shows and supported Trump's version. Later the truth came out, greatly embarrassing Pence.

Maybe payback, maybe just integrity, maybe a combination of both.

You have a funny idea what a coup is.

It's a little more engaged than a bunch of fanatical yahoo's in costumes and make up.

You must have missed that this thread is not about the Jan 6 riot, it's about Trump and his insiders trying to get Pence and others to engage in unconstitutional and illegal actions to keep Trump in office.

Are you under the impression that all coups involve gun battles?

At least Cthulhu or Giant Meteor just sort of happen and don’t involve people actively voting for an odious clown while convincing themselves (somehow) that he’s anything but.
I used to vote Republican. They used to be a far more rational party. I could excuse their social policies since they all seemed to be toothless before Trump. And even with Trump a lot of his promises never occurred due to Congress. Sadly he hypocritically abused Executive Orders more and worse than any other recent President. Most of the damage done was via Executive Order. That and his Supreme Court nominations (can someone get Clarence another order of ribs please).

At any rate the Republican party did quite a bit of good. OSHA, the EPA, the Civil Rights Act. All of them had strong Republican support and the first two were Republican inventions. How did they get from that to Trump?

I can't live in the past. Our country worked best when Republicans and Democrats worked together. Those days may be gone forever. So no more support of science denying, bigoted numpties. A long time ago that described the Democrats. Politics change. The names stay the same, but the ideals appear to have flipped around during my lifetime.

Same here. When they married themselves to the religious right, they went south. I wish they would jettison the extremists. Of course, both sides should do that.

I would say most coups entail the use of guns.

Bloodless coups on the other hand would require a declaration of power and a considerable cadre of insiders.

I doubt Trump has neither.

Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.”
