I believe we're on the cusp of a 'new humanity'. The human race won't disappear but is just barely starting to evolve into something better.

Homo sapiens is a very young species, just about two million years. It is found on every continent and thus seems to be able to adapt to almost any environment. The population numbers are still rising but a peak is to be expected in the very near future.
Conclusion: not endangered.

Depends on how drastically the environment changes. Humans have shown themselves to be very adaptable. Can we continue to adapt as the environment changes?

A species just needs to live long enough to procreate. As long as the birth-rate out paces the death-rate.

Homo sapiens has been around a couple of hundred thousand years. We have had agriculture for 10,000 years or so, radio for a bit over a century, and nuclear weapons for 75 years.

I doubt the human species will last another 10,000 years. If we go really bad, we could wipe ourselves out at any time.

I don't see much reason that humanity will go extinct in the short term.

I don't think that global warming will approach an extinction level event.

The most plausible threats are probably a large scale global nuclear war (as opposed to a regional one like India-Pakistan) or a global pandemic of a 100% fatal disease that spreads easily. Asteroid impact perhaps less likely.

I am more worried about the end of modern civilization and its transformation into a worldwide absolute dictatorship (the 1984 scenario) or some kind of neo-feudalism/warlordism (the Mad Max scenario).

Humanity may ultimately end not with a bang but with a long extended whimper. Human beings are unlikely to disappear any time soon, but life might become far more unpleasant in ways that will be very hard to recover from.

According to the Fermi paradox, I think eventually we are going to destroy ourselves with our technology down the road.

Yea, I've been listening to Elon Musk again.

Compared to 1000 years ago, yes, even compared to 100 years ago, the world is a much better place.

International warfare is virtually unknown (although there are still civil wars and wars against non-national entities such as terrorist groups). That all by itself is an incredible thing to say, but it's true. Look at how much international warfare there was in the 20th century. But today, countries have basically figured out that if they want a particular resource, the most expedient way to get it is trade. International business is in the process of ending international warfare.

We have made great strides in science. Not only has it produced tech that has made our lives much more comfortable, but it has developed Modern Medicine which has greatly reduced human suffering and extended human life.

We have made great progress as a world in terms of human rights. Indeed, 1000 years ago, the idea of human rights didn't even exist. Today, most countries protect our freedom of speech, religion, etc. Women are treated better. Minorities are treated better. There are laws against molestation and abuse of children. I'm not saying there aren't pockets where the old ways still rule -- when I think of the Taliban I shudder. But honestly, consider that most countries in the world have outlawed slavery -- an institution that was taken for granted until recently.

As a species, we have made great progress in things like reducing hunger in the world, and increasing education. Are these things not awesome? It's not like there isn't room for improvement, but the general trend of things is upward.

I am not naive. I do have concerns, such as the consequences of Climate Change (and not limited to that) that we will have to deal with. But I also think that necessity is the mother of invention. We will find a way to continue to survive.

So do I see the end of the world imminent? No. I think the future looks bright.

What we need to all ask ourselves is “is what we are witnessing today birth pangs or death pangs?”

My answer is that we are seeing the death pangs of the old world and the old ways while witnessing simultaneously, the birth of a new world with new ways and new systems.

Hello chinu! :)
I know that avatar isn't you....... you're older! :D

I don't think humanity is at its end yet. Catastrophes could reduce our numbers drastically but some would 'get through', I expect.

I'm neither optimistic nor pessimistic as to the future of humans as a species. We do tend to have a tendency to only apply ourselves when the going really gets tough, and hence we will no doubt cope with many of the things that might be seen more as hurdles than depth-defying chasms, but there well might be events that could put as back into the Stone Age, and there might even be some that would see us go extinct.

We have made remarkable progress in the tens of thousands of years that matter most, and particularly in the last few hundred, but we just don't know what might happen in the future that might give us an edge in survival or do the opposite. Our eagerness for plastics and our dismay at what we have done with them so as to pollute the environment, along with much other technology we have developed, should at least wake us up to the fact that we need to do more planning as a species. But many will just not want the control required to achieve a more sustainable life for us and other life, and perhaps such becoming a major issue.

Mostly I just ignore any of the predictions coming from religious beliefs.
