Yes, the Roman army.

I would play in the ruins of a roman port/fort and people it with those who lived there

Yes. I seem to remember my first imaginary friend was God (as talking to God made talking to myself somewhat more acceptable.) After I became an Atheist, I wanted an older brother instead.

Most kids seem to know that these friends were make believe, but not all.

I was going to say something like that, except did you know at the time that God was a fictional character that you made up?
