Its sad to see a part of the republicans appear to be turning on those Afghans who risked their lives alongside US troops with unevidenced allegations of terrorism.

I'm an (R) and support immigration from Afghanistan and other nations, especially with so many job openings that Americans are unwilling to fill.

From what I’ve seen Red is not against immigration. It is against illegal immigration.

People who loyally worked or fought side by side with Americans through war, have more than earned a place at the table, in my opinion. I’ve fine with them entering legally and being processed as American citizens. They’ve displayed more loyalty to America than those people here who never feel they have enough rights, who constantly complain about how horrible America is... who disrespect our flag, our history, our soldiers, our police, and our laws, and who live and breathe as ungrateful hypocrites in so much that they do. I suspect these new legal immigrants will value and cherish their lives here far more than many among Blue.

Given the US Republican party's record on immigration, it wouldn't be unexpected of them to attempt to bar immigration from Afghanistan for political refugees, or complain vocally about their supposed status as criminals and terrorists when they can't materially hinder these people from migrating to the US.

I hear this talking point a lot. I've never seen someone prove it.

It is indeed very poor logic to ban immigration from Syria while clamoring to let in political refugees, but I don't think logical conclusions were the foundation of those policies to begin with; they were, at their core, political signals for a specific section of their voter base that needed to feel like they were being pandered to on some level.

And it worked - to this day, I've seen not a single point of criticism from conservatives in this regard; the US Republican party's small gestures of xenophobia were evidently sufficient to keep them loyal.
