Even though I understand the mentality the sayings are trying to encourage, I feel tempted to come up with some smartass comment like how I'm sort of glad I don't remember the first moment of my life.

A sufi do remember the past, but after some time the focus is only inward in the present moment. But it is not easy

Yes but it is honestly easy to think of the past, or dream of the future if our present moment are a form of suffering. Accepting everthing that happens to us, and still remain focused only in present moment is difficult
