Bidens Gun Violence Reduction Plan

Citing the uptick in violence since the coronavirus pandemic forced millions of Americans out of work and into their homes for extended periods, administration officials said Biden on Wednesday will announce a five-point proposal that includes:
  • Cracking down on gun sellers who violate federal laws, with a new zero-tolerance policy.
  • Giving additional support to local law enforcement to help with summer crime increases.
  • Investing in community violence intervention programs.
  • Expanding summer employment and services, particularly for teens and young adults.
  • Helping formerly incarcerated individuals successfully reenter their communities.
...

"President Biden believes that the surge in gun violence that has affected communities across the country over the last year and a half is unacceptable," the White House said in a fact sheet outlining the plan, "and his Administration is moving decisively to act with a whole-of-government approach as we enter the summer months when cities typically experience a spike in violence."

I am honestly surprised that it is not merely another useless firearm ban...

True that it's not just a ban, but, will anything change? Reintegration for former inmates is a very serious problem in society that's going to take a lot of work because socially we don't accept their debt to society as having been paid. Summer employment opportunities is another one. It's a lofty, admirable goal, but it's nothing more than a stroke of a pen if it achieves nothing.

At least they're saying something useful, which is a step in the right direction. Hope they can actually pull this off.

IF they actually start enforcing the laws (point one of the plan) it would be a good start.

It's that "IF" that it all hinges around, and Biden certainly won't be throwing his hands up and proclaiming "no one knew it would be this hard." Biden knows it will be hard, he knows he'll be able to say "at least I tried."

Merely making it a law will do no good if the laws are not enforced.
I mean, how is Biden supposed to force those who are supposed to enforce the law enforce the law?

Yup. "I signed the bill, so I did my part and my hands are clean of Texas (or wherever) enforcing the law."
He had to know as he signed it that it will only go so far, pretty much being down to "blue states = more compliant/red states = less compliant."

Givin the environment of rioting and looting anytime a police officer assaults a black criminal, cries of defund the police...

Crime is having a royal holiday now.

BIden plan with the first two bullet points is to now go totalitarian, or am I being conspiratorial here???

The last three bullet points actually sound good, although I wonder what exactly it entails.

A buddy of mine had a series of DUI convictions which are felonies. When he got out of years in prison he was a felon and had an extremely hard time getting work. He learned how to cut hair in prison and was going to get his hairstylist's training when he got out, but he was flabbergasted to find out felons can't get training or a job if they are a felon. He ended up having a mental breakdown and back in jail due to substance abuse. The system is brutal.

Is it odd to you that a marginalized category of citizens rises up in protest to the racism that affects them?Perhaps you think it best if they just stay quiet and obedient as if they are property in the Southern states in the first half of the 1800's instead of citizens with civil rights.

Crime is having a royal holiday now.
An artifact of trump's mishandling the pandemic, and rampant disinformation from right wing media.

So gun dealers breaking laws is ok with you?

Biden is experienced and has excellent experts advising him, so I'm sure we will find good results, as long as republicans cooperate instead of protesting his policies.

It very much is. We say former inmates paid their debt to society, but there are too many people with stories similar to your friend's for this to be the case. They are still viewed as guilty, still treated as guilty, being pushed back into crime because very few will give them a chance.
There's actually a cannabis company here in California I like buying from because they help get inmates stable employment.

Yup. Some of them did do something to break the law. Like Rodney King. But did he deserve that beating? No.
Was Eric Gardner selling black market cigarettes? That one never went to court because a cop decided to play executioner.
Michael Brown did assault a police officer. Was it right for the cop to assume role of executioner? No.
George Floyd may have also broken the law. But after he was arrested a cop decided to be his executioner.

I like buying cannabis in Evanston, because there's a reparations tax on cannabis sold there in order to fund reparation payments to their Afro Americans.

Tamir Rise, a kid playing with a toy gun in a city park, shot and killed by a cop who didn't bother to assess facts before shooting. Citizens deserve better trained police.

A toy gun that looked real and dispatch that failed to notify the police of the full details provided.
That one I do not believe can be pinned on the police. A realistic looking gun is being waved around, and for all the cop knew it was real. This is because dispatch failed to notify the police of these crucial details.

With the growing interest in "designer" fire arms, it is getting more an more difficult to tell what is and is not a real fire arm.

Different debate but I'd probably avoid buying it there for that reason.

For other programs, they do it through funding.

State DOTs, counties, cities, etc., don't get federal money unless the abide by federal rules.

Apparently, on average, about 20% of local police budgets come from the feds. That amount of funding would be hard to make up if it were to suddenly disappear.

I would really like to see this particular problem of not enforcing the law dealt with:

And I sincerely hope that this problem (and a mighty huge problem it is) is what is being addressed with the first bullet point.

And somehow I suspect that messing with the funding is not going to work so well when getting ATF to actually enforce the law.
