I was just sitting in the porch reminiscing with my daughter when she brought up losing her Blackberry as a young child on a train. I don’t recall the last time I even mentioned or thought of BlackBerry prior to that.

I opened Facebook and lo and behold there was a Blackberry ad in my news feed.

After doing a bit of searching, I found that if you have the app downloaded on your device and have not ticked the microphone access off, the app listens to your personal conversations.

How private do you feel right now?

You’re welcome.

I do not have facebook :) But honestly if someone was to listen in to me, they mostly would not hear me say much anyway, mostly all the calls i do make, last from a minute to maybe one and a half minute

This wasn’t even a telephone conversation. We were sitting next to each other talking, not on our phones.

It's not just FB. Google and Apple are listening as well.

I feel fine. My desk top does not have a microphone. Oh . . . wait. Sometimes I have a headset plugged in. I wonder if it can listen through that. I don't use my tablets for facebook. Now I may need to test this somehow.

I don't use FB except very rarely. Last time used it was while we were looking for a VSP car for the kids. I am pretty sure it wasn't mentioned on FB although we did a lot of research on Google. FB began showing car ads.
And i have just checked 5 months later. We had decided on a electric car, every ad is for an electric car.

I can top that, if they only listen it's not that bad

1 month ago, I heard a male voice talking on my laptop. I was sleepy, and did have the thought "this might be a hacker", but I fell asleep. Next day I could not enter the laptop anymore. Was the first time since 1990, so not that bad.

I don't have FB(or a smartphone), so it can't listen to me.

But its welcome to pull my finger, and listen to the results of that...

Fine, because that app is denied mic and camera access on my phone. All you have to do is change the settings. It's not hard. I turned off the Google Assistant, too.

SalixIncendium,

I do not have facebook anymore. Blackberry is a very old phone and reminds me of the days of when the new technology of android had been released and my interested got more into looking and seen different types of phone they might be having to upgrade to that year. Have had service through Verizon for maybe 10 years or so. The phone technology sure has changed from what it once was even from the 70s on ward.

Did not know that the phone listen to conversation but that would not bother me either way, personally. Unless it was someone who is actually try to cause me physical harm, or mental distress, by being abusive, and down playing others, may need to walk away from those types of situations.

I use some non-root firewall software on my phone. Here are two services I have blocked from internet access: "Samsung text-to-speech-engine", "Sound detectors."

Hmm I wonder why I'm not allowed to uninstall these apps and if not then why they are called apps? That is misleading. I wonder why "Sound detectors" needs an internet connection?

Another reason why I'm glad I don't use Facebook.
