Jews Only: What do these Hebrew words mean?

TrueBeliever37

I have a silver plate with Hebrew words on it. I have figured out the meaning to some words but not all yet. What is the meaning of the following words?

1) Aleph - Nun - kaf -yod - hey

2) Lamed - aleph - yod - hey - yod - hey

3) Lamed - aleph - taw - sheen - aleph

4) zayin - kaf - vav - resh - aleph - taw

5) kaf -bet - dalet - aleph - taw

If someone can/will help me with these, then I would like to add some more of the words to the list if you don't mind. I tried to name the letters as they appeared from right to left.

Thanks

These are the first words of five of the Ten Commandments (I assume the rest are the other five):

1. אנכי ה' - I am the LORD

2. לא יהיה - You shall not have

3. לא תשא - You shall not take

4. זכור את - Remember

5. כבד את - Respect

This is a customary Jewish way to make decorations that include the Ten Commandments, using a short-form, which allows for smaller, more compact and/or symmetrical decorations.

Thanks, that makes sense, since there are 5 words in that section, and they are below the word Torah on the left. And the 5 words you responded to were below the word: Kaf - Taw - Resh

There are also a number of words around the plate. Some are obvious to me like eloheinu, asher, melek, and haOlam. But maybe you can help me with the others.

Bet - Chet - Dalet - Bet - Nun - Vav

Mem - Kaf - Lamed - Hey - Ayin - Mem - yod - Mem

vav - nun - taw - vav - lamed - nun - vav

aleph - taw - taw - resh - vav - kaf

aleph - taw - hey - hey ( I am suspecting this is another case where the full name of God is not given, since a dot is above the final hey. )

Just an additional note -- though you listed them as a string of letters, there are word breaks within them as each one is actually the first 2 Hebrew words of that particular statement.

6. lamed-aleph...tav-reish-tsadi-chet
lo tirtzach, do not kill
7. lamed-aleph...tav-nun-alef-fey sofit
lo tin'af, do not commit adultery

etc.

Bet - Chet - Dalet - Bet - Nun - Vav

That should be b-ch-reish

Spelling Bachar Banu (who chose us)
Mem - Kaf - Lamed - Hey - Ayin - Mem - yod - Mem
mikol ha'amim (from all the nation)
vav - nun - taw - vav - lamed - nun - vav
v'natan lanu (and gave us)

these are three lines of one of the blessings on the Torah
aleph - taw - taw - resh - vav - kaf

aleph - taw - hey - hey ( I am suspecting this is another case where the full name of God is not given, since a dot is above the final hey. )
I'm not really sure about the transcription of these two lines. I thought the blessing would continue, but it doesn't match up with what you have
אתתרוכ
אתהה

Thanks rosends! I actually knew a few of the words but couldn't tell where the all the breaks were for sure - Unless it gave a final letter.

Your word above has a Bet after the 2nd Taw if that helps.
Would it possibly be something like "You (the name) are eloheinu (our God) melek haOlam (the king forever) asher Bachar Banu (who chose us) mikol ha'amim (from all the nations)
v'natan lanu (and gave to us) aleph - taw - taw ( ???) Baruk ?

Or maybe that last taw starts the next word?

on the two "tablets" in the middle, you have the 10 commandments (first 2 words of each)

Around the edge you have the beginning of one of the blessings on the torah, but the problem is that because of the limited space, the blessing stops midword. It reads "baruch ata H' elo(h)einu melech ha'olam asher bachar banu mikol ha'amim vnatan lanu et t"

Thanks rosends,
Please state that in an English rendering that you think would be accurate.

Was this a plate that would have been used for offering collection?

Synagogues rarely use "offering plates." If charity is given during weekday services it is placed in a charity box.

The blessing around the edge can be understood as "blessed are you, Hashem, our God, king of the universe who chose us from all nations and gave us his Torah" but the text stops after "us" and only has the "T".

In the center you have, as stated earlier, the beginnings of the 10 commandments
