I don't know how true this is but as far as I know you're not even allowed to wear a crucifix or Star of David pendant.

What is life like in Iran where there are minorities ? Maybe that can show us how it may turn out in KSA

I know a guy who lived in Iran for a period, and he was a minority.
He speaks quite highly of what day to day life was like.
Mind you, he moved from Iran to South Africa, and tells me that stories about crime are overstated and it's pretty much the same as Australia, which doesn't quite gel.

It may well be a publicity stunt by a regime that employs literal axe murderers to get rid of vocal critics.

Still better than the alternative of not allowing the study of these books, though, I would argue.
