The Rare Creationist

It is probably good to remind our creationist friends that not all of their hero 'creation scientists' deny reality. Every now and then, one will say the quiet parts of creationism-belief (really, anti-evolution) out loud. Oh, they pay for it, yes they do. This one eventually lost his study group at Bryan U*.

Todd Wood, YEC, PhD, had people like the sorts of creationists we tend to encounter on discussion fora or in the comments sections of evolution-related articles on the internet, in mind when he wrote this, bolding mine:

The truth about evolution

September 30, 2009
I hope this doesn't turn into a rant, but it might. You have been warned.

Evolution is not a theory in crisis. It is not teetering on the verge of collapse. It has not failed as a scientific explanation. There is evidence for evolution, gobs and gobs of it. It is not just speculation or a faith choice or an assumption or a religion. It is a productive framework for lots of biological research, and it has amazing explanatory power. There is no conspiracy to hide the truth about the failure of evolution. There has really been no failure of evolution as a scientific theory. It works, and it works well.

I say these things not because I'm crazy or because I've "converted" to evolution. I say these things because they are true. I'm motivated this morning by reading yet another clueless, well-meaning person pompously declaring that evolution is a failure. People who say that are either unacquainted with the inner workings of science or unacquainted with the evidence for evolution. (Technically, they could also be deluded or lying, but that seems rather uncharitable to say. Oops.)

Creationist students, listen to me very carefully: There is evidence for evolution, and evolution is an extremely successful scientific theory. That doesn't make it ultimately true, and it doesn't mean that there could not possibly be viable alternatives. It is my own faith choice to reject evolution, because I believe the Bible reveals true information about the history of the earth that is fundamentally incompatible with evolution. I am motivated to understand God's creation from what I believe to be a biblical, creationist perspective. Evolution itself is not flawed or without evidence. Please don't be duped into thinking that somehow evolution itself is a failure. Please don't idolize your own ability to reason. Faith is enough. If God said it, that should settle it. Maybe that's not enough for your scoffing professor or your non-Christian friends, but it should be enough for you.

Even with his "out" ("If God said it, that should settle it."), he was still attacked by his all-loving brethren in Christ. In fact, nearly every time I share this on a forum like this, I see replies declaring Wood to be a phony, a fraud, 'not a real Christian', etc.

So sad.
Yet so fun to watch!

I think I've told this before on RF, but I had a discussion with a YEC once that had this statement from him that went something like "yes, it looks exactly like Earth is very old and evolution explains it all. But God created the world just like the Bible says but did it to make it seem like the Earth is very old and evolution is real". It's a test of faith, you see.

Ahhh, ok...

Actually i have heard the the same, more than once, maybe different wording but the same essential meat. It really is quite funny

It is a test of their faith. And they failed it in denying evolution. Faith is willing to modify beliefs when presented with evidence. A lack of faith, holds tenaciously to beliefs, against evidence to the contrary. A lack of faith cannot entertain other ways of understanding truth.

Life as we know it was created and planted like a seed in the hospitable waters of the ancient briny seas. Life evolved from there to life as we know it today. There was a purposive potential within the forward march of the evolution of life.

I think it’s Because they believe in last Thursdayism or something of the sort and to discount evolution provides relief to get that belief off their chest without much offense to anyone.

ie. If one believes the world started in 1979 they’re basically saying that all the Bad events that happened prior are just memories made by God. This can be offensive and furthermore they don’t want to be looked like as mentally ill.

Also Beliefs of this nature can never be proved So It’s probably healthy they remain private. Who knows I could be wrong. Maybe nobody believes this. Idk
I do think one who possibly believes such things should probably Just say I accept evolution and move on. no big deal really.

Yes, this is the old "God put the fossils in the rocks to fool the scientists" gambit. That one has been going for over a century, I think, and has only got more ridiculous with time.:D

Somebody has studied Sun Tsu.
Your typical YEC, armed with his faith and the impression that he knows all relevant arguments by studying AiG, walks into RF and gets a thorough beating. He should have listened to Dr. Wood. "Know your enemy."

Interestingly, Galileo encountered the same argument from geocentrists back in his day. Amazing how impenetrable some beliefs are despite the evidence.

Great! Let's see some evidence of this.

See above.
The fact that evolution began with primitive forms of marine life and kept falling upstairs to the point wherein it produced a conscious mind that demands evidence.
