Oklahoma passes bill that can protect drivers who hit protesters

OKLAHOMA CITY (KOCO) - Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed a bill into law that grants immunity to drivers who unintentionally injure or kill protesters while attempting to flee a riot.

It also stiffens penalties for people who block roadways in an effort to protest.

The bill is a reaction to an incident in Tulsa that involved a clash on the highway between a driver and demonstrators who had spilled out onto the road.

Democrats questioned whether the bill was needed since the driver in the case wasn’t charged.

A group protesting the legislation briefly gained entry to the House Chambers inside the State Capitol in Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

The session resumed after the protesters left the Capitol building.

I recall a thread about this when it was proposed. So now it's passed. I'm not surprised, actually.

These are human beings, not dominos.

Even if you detest what they do, there is always the fact that they are someone's parent, someone's child, someone's sibling, someone's friend.

Until we can start humanizing those who we disagree with, we(as a species) are screwed.

well .....if you stand in the road......like a domino

I was told as a child......stay off the pavement

I was also told not to intentionally harm others, unless perhaps you're defending yourself.

Driving your car intentionally into a protest is not something a decent person does. Should someone run in front of them and they're unable to avoid hitting them, that's one thing. However, with as honest as things are right now, I suspect most people are going to claim 'accident'. And, in the event it really was accidental, most people in the other crowd would say 'intentional'.

And this is why I think we're(as a society) are screwed.

The fact that we have so much hate towards each other that we gloat over having the chance to harm, possibly even kill someone that's not in our 'tribe' is....disgusting.

I was disturbed by the domino comment.
Im more disturbed by the belief being surrounded by protesters puts him at risk enough to injure and possibly kill someone.
And I fear that mentality will be common enough that protesters (not rioters) will be needlessly hurt and killed by some wankers who doesn't know the difference and is easily frightened OR is taking advantage of the law.

If I’m going about my business driving and a group of protesters blocks the road ... it’s my fault? No, they’ve intentionally put themselves in harm’s way. Enough of this bull**** of blaming everyone else.

I have had that happen

as long as the tribe is not standing in the road

Sorry you had that happen to you, @Thief . That would scare the crap out of me.

Its only your fault if you plow through them if they were standing there as you approached. If they jump in front of you when you're driving, that's their fault. In any other situation, if I plow into someone who is taking too long to cross the road because it irks me that they're in the street, I'm going to be doing jailtime. Sometimes people inconvenience, annoy, or anger us. It doesn't mean we have the right to do them intentional harm.

I am on neither the side of the protestors or the drivers. I just think its ridiculous we can't summon up a shred of compassion for people who feel differently than us. Its like there's some game everyone's trying to 'win'.

you gave been favoring.....the domino in the road

you should be in favor......freedom to come as go

and not stand blocking someone's passing

I give favor to the one more disadvantaged(the one not protected by a hunk of metal).

One shouldn't hit people in the road intentionally.

And if one feels inclined to go around hitting people in the street... well, that's bit of bitterness and hate I sure can't heal. I would image that would be a heavy load to carry.

surrounded by people......clearly upset about something

THAT would be an area to vacate

stay out of the way

Sure, it should be vacated. Just in a decent manner.

We are obviously not going to agree on this point here.
