While we wait for local input, what I have read is that India now has its own variant, which may partially evade previous immunity and/or be more infectious. We have some cases in the UK now and are urgently investigating it. Another thing that I have read has not helped is that irresponsible politicians complacently thought India was over the worst and encouraged mass gatherings.....spreading the new variant.
Yes, we thought it was over except in some pockets. Deaths in Delhi were down to less than 5 and infections less than 200. Today there are 6000 infections and 300 deaths. Overall 137,000 new infections and 2260 deaths in India in last 24 hours. It returned with a vengiance.
There is a triple mutant variant, second lineage, of the SARS-CoV2 virus now circulating in India. Three mutations the of SARS-CoV2 virus have combined to form a new variant. In this case, the three mutations are a deletion and 2 changes in the viruses spike protein. The rate of C O.V.I.D.-19 infections peaked in the U.S. as the number of total cumulative confirmed cases were around 6 percent of the population. If India follows this same trend, its C.O.V.I.D.-19 infection rate should peak around (edited) * 66 million * more Indians being tested positive for C.O.V.I.D.-19, Assuming for every Indian now confirmed as being infected by C.O.V.i.D-19 ends up spreading the disease to two other persons, India's rate of C.O.V.I.D.-19 infections would peak around June 2nd. Assuming one percent of Indian confirmed C.O.V.I.D..-19 cases end up dying from C.O.V.I.D.-19 within 30 days of getting infected by the SARS-CoV2 virus, there will be approximately ( edited ) * 830,000 Indians * who have died from C.O.V.I.D.-19 by the beginning of July.
