While the US is relatively flat when it comes to new COVID-19 cases in the past month, India appears to be experiencing the largest spike in new cases in the last month since the pandemic began. Perhaps one of our members who live there can shed some light upon what's happening there?

While we wait for local input, what I have read is that India now has its own variant, which may partially evade previous immunity and/or be more infectious. We have some cases in the UK now and are urgently investigating it. Another thing that I have read has not helped is that irresponsible politicians complacently thought India was over the worst and encouraged mass gatherings.....spreading the new variant.

It looks as though these new variants will be a continuing feature, in countries where a high incidence of disease is allowed to persist.

I can't help but think it's more than coincidence that the spike began immediately after Maha Shivaratri and Holi. I wonder if public festivals contributed to this.

I think it's too early for public gatherings. My ex initially wanted to hold my daughter's baby shower at a local church. I convinced her and my daughter to rather hold it at an outdoor shelter at a local park. But I still have reservations about the reservation I made yesterday.

Utter disregard of basic rule - wear masks, keep distance.
1. We had major agitations regarding changes in agricultural laws fueled by the wanna-be opposition parties (still continuing), 2. Religious gatherings (Kumbha etc.), 3. followed by elections in five states (four big ones - Assam, West Bengal, Tamilnadu and Kerala. W. Bengal elections not yet over), 4. migrant workers wanting to go home because of lock-downs, 5. wholesale veg. markets. The images will make it clear.

Religion screws the world one again.

Since the vaccine came out people started thinking it's all over. Everything went back to normal for a while. They didn't use masks anymore, nor followed any precautions. Hopefully seeing the numbers now they'll be more careful.

Yes, we thought it was over except in some pockets. Deaths in Delhi were down to less than 5 and infections less than 200. Today there are 6000 infections and 300 deaths. Overall 137,000 new infections and 2260 deaths in India in last 24 hours. It returned with a vengiance.

Yesterday, because of these stats, I researched about countries that aren't reporting at all, or are under-reporting. The WHO and others are quite convinced other counties are suffering equally as badly. India, at least, reports their statistics, although even then, it may be underestimated.

As Aupmanyav mentioned, sadly, it's hitting with a vengeance.

There is a triple mutant variant, second lineage, of the SARS-CoV2 virus now circulating in India. Three mutations the of SARS-CoV2 virus have combined to form a new variant. In this case, the three mutations are a deletion and 2 changes in the viruses spike protein. The rate of C O.V.I.D.-19 infections peaked in the U.S. as the number of total cumulative confirmed cases were around 6 percent of the population. If India follows this same trend, its C.O.V.I.D.-19 infection rate should peak around (edited) * 66 million * more Indians being tested positive for C.O.V.I.D.-19, Assuming for every Indian now confirmed as being infected by C.O.V.i.D-19 ends up spreading the disease to two other persons, India's rate of C.O.V.I.D.-19 infections would peak around June 2nd. Assuming one percent of Indian confirmed C.O.V.I.D..-19 cases end up dying from C.O.V.I.D.-19 within 30 days of getting infected by the SARS-CoV2 virus, there will be approximately ( edited ) * 830,000 Indians * who have died from C.O.V.I.D.-19 by the beginning of July.

I was wondering why it took so long to take off in India. I have no idea of climate there. I know it is just a tad warmer than Washington state. Could it be related to the monsoon? Have people been driven indoors? There must be some explanation for why it took so long for Covid19 to be a problem there.
