It's way more believable than that, though.
I haven't read the book, but have read about it. The murderer kills a co-worker after that co-worker uses his Falkland Islands War footage without crediting him.
In real life, Bill left CBS after exclusive footage of riots in Buenos Aires (related to the Falkland Islands conflict) was used without him being credited.

(For anyone unaware, this isn't a new book. It was written in 1998.)
