This I think highlights our reactive nature and how dangerous it is to just fall for attention grabbing headlines without critically thinking about it.

I do have to wonder how it was pre internet. By that I mean these days you can fact check relatively easily. Somewhat anyway. But before the internet were you at the mercy of the newspapers and had to take their word for it?

Of course, it's easy to lie and manipulate public opinion. I don't know that it's any easier "these days" than it was in previous eras. In fact, it's probably just the opposite, since liars can be exposed much more quickly and easily with current technology than what was available in the past.

Basically. You could maybe verify some things at your local library. But for the most part you were at the mercy of "ethical" journalists.

Of course, it's easy to lie and manipulate public opinion. I don't know that it's any easier "these days" than it was in previous eras. In fact, it's probably just the opposite, since liars can be exposed much more quickly and easily with current technology than what was available in the past.

True, fact checking and verification has gotten better with the advent of the internet. But the speed and ferocity at which information proliferates, and false information hangs on, is unique to the recent generations.

I think it's notable that anyone can do it because so many "news" website generate stories by simply copy-pasting social media posts without any kind of validation or confirmation and so many others simply copying entire articles from each other (which is illegal, but none of them complain because they all do it, including the mainstream ones).

I suspect they don't even care whether the stories are true or not, since it's rare for any kind of clarification to come to light like it did here and even if it does, they'll have already got their clicks.
