Meanwhile some are advocating making it even easier for people to buy guns so that someone who has a whim can grab a gun and start blasting away ignoring that the US is the only so-called "civilized" nation that encourages gun violence by what it does and does not regulate.

I have to wonder (I am too lazy to search) if we just hear about them more or if there really are more per capita.

With the web and social media everyone is more aware they are going on.
I don't know if there's more or less, but they definitely have became more known about.

the US is the only so-called "civilized" nation

As far as I know nobody has ever accused the US of being civilized. In fact:
"Once there was one of those witty Frenchmen whose name I cannot for the moment recall,
Who wittily remarked that America is the only country in history that has passed directly from barbarism to decadence without passing through civilization at all,
A remark which is wittily repeated with enthusiasm frantic
In the lands on the other side of the Atlantic,
And is, I suppose, more or less true,
Depending on the point of view." - Ogden Nash

There are countries in which the police are not armed, or only armed by exception. The UK is one. It seems to work, more or less. But then, we don't all have GUNS, of course.
To be fair, as far as I know, most Americans don't have guns, either. The actual portion of gun-owning citizens in the US seems to be a minority among the total adult population - a sizable minority, mind you, but still a minority:
