I think what was meant was "Reverse- engineering . . .".

Its a process by which a subject is altered to fit preconceived notions.

If that's what the op meant, then in this context it would mean something like coming up with a vision of Jesus that conforms to personal notions that have nothing to do with anything in the Gospels.
