"IS IT ALIVE?.....IS IT ALIVE?" Pretty much what the doctor said when he cut me out of my moms womb....

When my mind is alive I am lively and when I feel brain dead I resemble the walking dead.

But I would say that the thing that stands out most for me regarding the living and the dead is the state of their eyes. By just looking at somethings eyes one can see whether a creature is alive or dead. There is some active spark there or something that is present when one is alive and disappears when one is dead.

you have a special perception.....

How about "tardigrades?" They can dry up completely - a special sugar crystallizing inside them and holding all their internal structures in place, and when/if the water returns it dissolves the sugar, and the tiny creatures just go about their business again. It is said that they can remain dormant for up to 30 years! Also from Google:

They can also live at temperatures as cold as absolute zero or above boiling, at pressures six times that of the ocean's deepest trenches, and in the vacuum of space.

According to the Theory of Relativity both the beginning and end of life are illusions. Instead everything is part of a continuum.

Tiny animals survive exposure to space

For 12 days in September 2007, some 3000 water bears hitched a ride into space on ESA’s orbital Foton-M3 mission. That the water bears survived, shows just how robust they are.
