Container Gardening

I'm thinking about doing some container gardening.

Are there any good veggies or fruits that do well in containers?

I've got Green bell pepper, garlic, strawberry, sage, and potatoes.

I've found tomatoes to be risky.
They want really good soil, lest they turn brown on the bottom.
My best container veggie is sweet basil.

I love strawberries but only have a courtyard so... Hubby got hold of a 6 ft length of 6 inch plastic pipe and cut lots of 2 inch holes in it about 8 inches apart. Bunged up the bottom and drilled a couple of small holes in it, filled it with compost and put a strawberry plant in each hole. We grow 20 strawberry plants in a 6 inch square space and get the fruit from May to October with the summer months providing for a family of 5 at least once per week. Watering is a pain, it seeps out the top holes and we need to ensure it gets enough water to reach the bottom.

The idea has caught on, here is a recent commercial version

We have also grown tomatoes and peas in pots without success, potatoes and lettuce with great success.

We won an apple tree and had nowhere to plant it so its gone into a 30 inch pot which it seems to love. Only a few apples least year but if the blossom is anything to go by we should get plenty this year. I have no idea what to do when it outgrows the pot, we have no space for a larger one.

We also have a veranda on the first floor that has 3 largish and deep, 20 inch containers,. One growing a fig tree and the other two with grapes, the vines trained along the outside of the balustrade. October time home grown grapes and figs are just wonderful

Bell peppers we do ok with, usually we grow a couple of plants each year but they are kept indoors in the laundry room (which is mostly glass so bright and warm). The fruit are small and we don't get more than a couple of meals out of them but the flavour is awesome.

We also grow/use a lot of basil, several pots over the year, a container of mint and one of rosemary. The mint needs strict discipline to keep it under control

The only other thing we have is a lemon tree, only about 4 ft tall but its it's never fruited but its fun to grow and we live in hopes

If you make another one run a smaller pipe down inside it to one side or center to pour water in with holes drilled throughout it to allow water to drain out down the length of the whole pipe.

Good idea, thanks. We've had it 5 years now, i guess this will be the last productive year for the plants and the compost must be past its use by date, a strip and rebuild next year with your pipe included sounds like a plan

I'm sorry that I can't be of assistance...my wife can grow plants in containers if I am not nearby. If I am nearby, even if I never touch or even look at them, everything dies...

I would cap the bottom of it so it doesn't drain more out of the bottom.

Or another idea would be a soaker hose put down in it before you fill it with compost leaving the connecting port out the top to hook your water hose to. Don't know how long it would last being in compost but I would say several years at least.

What Is a Soaker Hose and How Does It Work?

Very little water reaches the bottom,

A friend has one (or several) running all over his garden with a timer and moisture monitoring setup. If needed it turns on at night and off early morning. They are away from home for half the year so it keeps his garden alive.

Do not forget the Basil, rosemary, thyme and the mint. Container gardens were I live are subject to so much heat that it is hard to keep them properly watered. The one that did the best was rosemary. We have also had fun taking the bottoms of a celery stalks and the bottoms of lettuce from the store, placing them in a small amount of water until you see the middle sprout new leaves. Then transfer to soil and keep the soil nice and moist. Enjoy.

Thai peppers seem to love a pot more than the ground in my experience.
Ours grew like crazy, until our Schnauzer decided he liked the taste and ate ALL of them in one sitting.
One crazy dog, that one was.

I've not quite killed anything, but my purple thumb stressed a cannabis plant into changing its sex from female to male.
I've long wanted to have an herb garden, but I didn't even like Chia pets when those were big. So, I don't have an herb garden.
