DMX: One Christian's Perspective

One thing I do not get, in the Protestant Evangelic world any and all rap is hated and viewed as bad. This is includes Christian rap, even though it's typically far more explicitly Christian than most of the Evangelical Approved Christian rock bands (a lot of them you'd never guess they are Christian if you don't read it in a bio or something).

When I listen to music, I want to be inspired. Rap music, if one can call it music, is not inspiring. It shouldn't be offered to Yahweh as a special offering. Neither do I think rock music like what is played today should be offered. When it comes to music offered to Yahweh, we should try to get back to the type of inspirational music that would have been offered to Yahweh in Biblical times. They are a number of anthems, hymns and spiritual songs which are pleasant and show the sort of music we should be offering to Yahweh.

How much rap have you listened to? Even Weird Al Yankovic has done many rap songs, and he's actually good at it. And one of his rap songs I strongly agree with about how lame mainstream TV is, and another rap song he does inspires me to get my nerd on.

Hi Shadow Wolf. Good evening. As you can imagine, I haven't heard much rap music in my lifetime. But you make an observation about such music that rings true at least from what I have heard. Rap music is often complaining and moaning about things that the artist has experienced. Psalm 69:30 says "I will praise the name of Elohim with a song, And will magnify him with thanksgiving." Music should be joyful. Music to Yahweh should be about giving thanksgiving. We should be "19 speaking one to another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to Yahweh; 20 giving thanks always for all things in the name of our Messiah Yahshua to Elohim, even the Father" we read in Ephesians 5:18-20. Rap music in my mind isn't joyful. It's not really singing. And as the scripture I used just quoted, it isn't making melody with your heart to Yahweh.

What artist doesn't? Paint, music, stone, clay, word, regardless the medium artists are known for pouring their emotions into their work. Even many of the classic Christian works of art are heavily based from the author's perspective, such as art that came from the Crusades. Writing of his return home from the Third Crusade, Dante Alighieri lost his way home, spiritually and literally (as a character), and one a work of literature widely regarded as one of the greatest was born. Or, Chopin's Funeral March. That was his emotional response and reaction to the loss of a friend.
Rap music in my mind isn't joyful. It's not really singing.
That's because your ears are closed to it.
And as the scripture I used just quoted, it isn't making melody with your heart to Yahweh.
Who are you to judge that? When a Christian rapper makes a Christian rap song glorifying, why would you deny that?

Different people like different music. Rap is not for you but can be great for others.

I am not religious so can't speak on that point but there is much rap music that really is life inspiring. And some that isn't to a lesser or much greater degree.

When rap first started to become popular, like you, i loathed it but did attend a few rap concerts with friends. That taught me that like every other music genre, some is good, some is really good, with strong messages and meaning and some is awful.

It has its place, but I think media oversaturation of rap is leaving a sour taste in peoples mouths. It's everywhere, especially in ads to a point its nauseous.

They just need to lay off the cold funky medina for awhile.

Rap has always been politically motivated. It’s been frequently used as a call to arms, a call for peace and unity and as an expression of people living their lives. As any genre of music/literature/art etc.
It can be inspirational or it can be polished nothingness. The latter is a fault of capitalism to be fair.
