China's announcement to the US. "We're an equal now".

China’s Message to America: We’re an Equal Now

How do you take this?

A threat?

A challenge?

Most don't perceive "equal" as being a term of cooperation and benevolence.

Makes me wonder what China has up its sleeve here.
Multiple meanings....
- Threat to avoid conflict.
- Propaganda.
- Having designs on Taiwan, the S China Sea, northern
Japanese islands, & countries bordering the S China Sea.
- Not fully understanding the technologies involved.

I'd also expect China to start moving eastward in the Pacific
by building upon remote atolls edging towards Midway & HI.

The fact they need to make the point so bluntly suggests an inferiority complex.

But inferiority complexes are dangerous and need to be handled with tact. Thank God Trump is no longer president.

Their military is still no match, but your right. It's foolish to underestimate your enemy.
That may be the case, but their economic position is worth considering, too. I would suggest we find new places for our production so we can reduce our dependency.

That's why we are paying the price ever since the brainacs in charge got rid of almost all our industry and turned the US into a dependent service based economy.

Its merely an article title. I didn't read the entire thing, but the message isn't "We're equal now." We've always been equal. USA is still equal, not less. We just believe international waters are international not claimable as real estate.

It seems this is partly over Taiwan and China knows full well we are under treaty to protect the Taiwanese.

Taiwan is strangely a personally felt issue over there. Mainland actually are offended that Taiwan is separate. We find it hard to believe, but its true. The way we in USA see it, the communist regime simply lost a bit of land. Their fault, their problem. Taiwanese feel very threatened. For them is it personal, and we understand how they feel. Look at what happened to Hong Kong. Why would anyone in Taiwan want that? We understand how the Taiwanese feel, and we don't understand how Mainland feels. Therefore to us Mainland has no civil case, so this is simply a matter of wanting to expand again like Mainland did with Tibet or we did with Texas. Same thing to us, and we don't see any reason for Mainland to be upset about it.

Sometimes I wonder what Communist China's global ambitions are.

Its unwise for me to suggest what those are. There is a course on EdX you can take to learn about China's worldview. Beyond that I can't recommend a resource.

My brother in law has been to China for adoption purposes and my nieces were born there.

It's hard to get any real worldview because of Communist China's implementation of social scoring its citizens.

I guess one would have to be high level official to even get a true inkling, but one could supposedly piece together bits and pieces of info to form a larger picture.

I consider this as a boast China's economic power is now equal to the U. S. due to how well China domestically contained the SARS-CoV2 virus while the U. S.has been economically devasted by Trump's mishandling of the C. O. V. I. D.-19 pandemic.
