Alabama school Yoga Ban

Secret Chief

nirvana is samsara
Alabama to keep ban on school yoga as conservatives say they fear rise in Hinduism

Alabama is holding fast to a ban on teaching school kids Yoga, for fear it will cause a rise in Hinduism and usage of guided meditation practices. (This is bad?)

What say you yoga practitioners, did you become Hindu because of your mindful stretching and movements? /s
I only did it for a couple of years but had to stop as it was turning me into an unpatriotic, LSD using, turban-wearing devil worshipper.

I do know which is greater: their ignorance or their bigotry.

Meditation is as old as the hills and is found in all major religious traditions, and "yoga" just another term for "meditation" in Hindi, and one can take entirely secular classes on yoga, which my wife & I did many moons ago.

Fair is fair. Hindus should be happy about it because it means we're treating it as a religion, instead of something else or totally ignoring it.

Yoga is certainly Hinduism. But I doubt what the school was promoting was actually Yoga.
Asanas, Meditation and pranayam are practices. They're commonly used in certain denominations of Hinduism, but unless doctrine is being promoted, they're just exercises.

Was Hindu doctrine being taught?

Not as far as I can tell. My guess is it is/was a very western style, secular yoga. Poses, and maybe some mindfulness? Nothing theological.

I do half an hour's yoga each morning, i have done most mornings for over 30 years and i can honestly say it has never tempted me to take up any form of faith.

Much athletic stretching resembles the kind of 'yoga' they do in schools. Somebody should report the Alabama Crimson Tide football team.

Secretly, we're reprogramming you via those stretches. One of these days you'll just realise it.
