Thanks for asking! I am a American convert :)
So which tradition/sampradaya do you follow, if any.
We travelled from here to DC once to go to the Murugan temple in Lanham. Have you been there? Or the Shiva-Vishnu temple nearby?

I apologize if we've had this conversation before ... my memory for stuff on RF isn't very good.

A Hindu in WV. Having lived three years halfway between Ripley and Spencer on the Roane/Jackson county line, I see that being well received by the residents down there should it become known. :p

LOL! Yeah, the closest temple is an hour away, which isn't so bad. We also have the New Vrindavan ISKCON temple, and I want to visit it someday!

Honestly? The few I have told, are intrigued but confused. Haven't had any hate yet, knock on wood.

It's okay! I follow Nandinatha unofficially :) No I haven't been there but I would love to go someday!

Yes, we would have a lot in common. There are a ton of unofficial Nandinatha sampradaya devotees.

The Murugan temple has a large festival every summer. I used to get invited, because they got my email when we were there. That was like 10 years ago, maybe longer.

I have selected the girl for my grandson.

Chubby, flaw-less skin. My grandson is 18/19. He has completed his school and is now in college (will study law). The girl is probably 14/15. They are related to us (third cousin sort of thing, permitted by Hindu law). I do not think her family will have any problem with the arrangement. I told this to my wife just a few minutes ago. She pooh-poohed the idea. Of course, we might not be there when and if this happens. But I have got the ball rolling. No compulsion, just an idea. The family was there when our group assembled for Bhai Dooj (the brother-sister festival) yesterday evening. Next year I may broach the idea with my nephew (i.e., the girl's father).
I remember that a grandma (in relation) talked about marriage to a girl when I was just 14. Ten years later I married that very girl, the grandma had passed away before that. We will be completing 55 years of our marriage in Feb. next year.
Indians are sort of mad when it comes to marriages. :D

Keep us updated with what happens with this!

And a dumb question... What do brothers with no sisters or sisters with no brothers do on Bhai Dooj? (Its been nagging at my mind...)

Then a sister from a close relation (first or second cousin). My brother and myself had no sister, but we have three sisters (daughters of our maternal uncles). They tie the thread on our wrists. My grandsons also do not have a sister. So it is my daughter's daughter and the grand daughter of my brother. Then there are 'dharma brother' or 'dharma sister' (not any relation but has always been accepted as one). >> These are considered very pious relations which cross even the boundaries of religion. No trifling with these relations, they are sacrosanct.

As the story goes, Queen Karnavati of Gujarat accepted Emperor Humayun as her brother. And when Karnavati's kingdom was attacked by another Muslim king, Humayun came all the way from Delhi to help her. He could not save Karnavati, but defeated and killed the Muslim king who had attacked Karnavati's kingdom.

Further to my post, the relationship between my grandson and that girl is that their great grandmothers were sisters, one of them being my mother who loved her sister, some 10 years older, very much. A mention of her used to bring tears in my mother's eye even in her old age. I am an atheist but if they are in heaven according to theist thinking, I am sure that they both will be mightily pleased with such a match. I think the relationship cannot be classified as incest.

No, it isn’t by a long shot. They are third cousins because they share great-great-grandparents (their great-grandparents were siblings). They share ~0.75% DNA. Very distant relationship.

Best wishes to the family and couple. :)

So I finally got myself to temple tonight. I wore a tie, which I never do. I just wanted to look a little nicer than usual. I felt really good, but I almost started crying at Maa Lakshmi’s sanctum. She’s been helping me all this time. I just stood there saying “Dhanyavāda Mātā”.

I hadn’t been there since March or April, and longer before that due to this damn pandemic. I walked up to the front desk, and the lady I became friendly with said “Oh my God!”. I said “No, He’s inside. It’s just me”. :D She giggled. Even the priests gave me big hellos, asking me how and where I’ve been. I said I’ve had a rough time, lost my job, and just wasn’t myself. They felt bad and said things have to get better. They said they hoped to see me like they used to. I said count on it. :)

Sounds like a beautiful time. :)
