Illegal To Insult Cops?

I actually like it, what possible good can come from insulting these cops? Is that really going to help during a riot? I am all for actions that will (or at least should) result in less violence. As long as the police officers are keeping the peace and doing their job there is no reason rioters should be insulting or taunting them. Officers are people too and they will get pissed, why purposely taunt, insult and anger someone with a weapon(s)?

Edit to add: As I have said many times before, especially for those who want ot say this limits freedom of speech. Your freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. If you think it's a smart way to exercise your freedom of speech by insulting someone with a weapon at a riot then, be ready to deal with the consequences. For those who do not know this yet but, its almost impossible to sue a cop (look it up if you want more details) so even when they are wrong (as some have been lately) no action would be taken against them (at least no serious action). So do you still wanna insult them? Free country, free will do as you wish but, be sure you are ready to deal with the consequences of your actions

One possible issue with the bill is that it opens up the potential for abuse. A cop might claim somebody insulted them even if they didn't. Even if the cop is using a body camera and is also using it to record audio,* it's easy for an individual voice to be drowned out amid the din. It would be the cop's word against that of a rioter.

*which should really be the case any time police confront somebody in my opinion but that's a different debate.

Kentucky bill would make it a crime to insult a police officer
Excerpted....
A bill moving through Kentucky's Senate would make it a crime to insult or taunt a police officer during a riot. Supporters say the bill targets people who unlawfully "cross the line" but opponents call it a blatant attempt to crush protests and a violation of First Amendment rights.

Senate Bill 211 mandates up to three months' imprisonment for a person who "accosts, insults, taunts, or challenges a law enforcement officer with offensive or derisive words," or makes "gestures or other physical contact that would have a direct tendency to provoke a violent response from the perspective of a reasonable and prudent person."

A person convicted of this misdemeanor charge could also face a $250 fine and be disqualified from public assistance benefits for three months.
I am not surprised. I expected it sooner in USA, though, usually USA is way ahead with such stunts. I have seen my government trying hard to trick us too in accepting such new laws. Even if we don't accept them, I would be highly surprised if they would not push them through anyway, if needed finding a good excuse using good old Covid19, or 21. Mark my words (not that I expect people would:D), won't take more than a few years. I hope I'm wrong, but seeing it in Hong Kong, China and now in USA (and Holland and etc.), I'm pretty sure this will be the New Normal sooner than I wish.

But, I can see it in a positive way, nobody can obstruct justice soon, freedom is maybe gone or immensely limited for a while, but at least the usual criminality is also better eliminated. At least 1 positive outcome of this, IMO, horrible 'Brave" New Normal World.

Kentucky is saying that cops are thin skinned cry babies and not to hurt their feelings. It's a law designed for cops to masturbate their egos with (as if they need to do that any more). So, if passed, during the next police brutality protest that happens, when peaceful protestors are marching down the street chanting "No Justice, No Peace! F***k the Police!" police will use that as an excuse to attack the protestors and claim it was a "riot".

I'm not worried.
It wouldn't stand up in higher courts.

I'm not worried either, I'm too old for that;)

"to worry or not to worry" is for the next generation:cool:

You are an optimist I can see, we'll wait and see if you are a realist too:)
I'm an optimist by nature.
Right or wrong, it's a healthy state of mind.

Someone should maybe tell the Pubs in Kentucky that there is this thing called the "1st Amendment".

Interfering with an arrest is one thing that shouldn't be allowed, but voicing opinions is another.

I can’t help thinking about all the people who have already faced immediate summary judgment and execution for the crime of disrespecting a police officer.

Indeed, serfs paid their lord in goods and service, but their lord was not their employee, either.
One could even frame it as a ruling bureaucracy extracting resources from its subjects.

I have no idea what any of that means lol
