(Pope Francis meeting the President of Iraq today)

I can't help but fear for his safety but I hope he can bring some healing and reconciliation to that war ravaged country.

God bless Pope Francis!

The Christians in Iraq have been facing much hostility, especially in the past few decades, and I pray those that remain can live there safely and rebuild the once vibrant (but obviously still a minority) community in that ancient land.

Yes, it is sad what has become of the ancient Christian communities of the Middle East. My first thought when I saw this headline earlier was that I hope he doesn't get blown up.

Fortunately, US drones had their target data re-calibrated just in time.

The Popes safety was my first thought. Christians were certainly safer under Saddam.

Pope Francis said he will act as “a penitent pilgrim” to implore God’s forgiveness, reconciliation and healing after decades of war and terrorism in Iraq. Next, he said, “I am he coming as a pilgrim of peace” to affirm that “you are all brothers and sisters” and to seek fraternity by praying and walking together “with our brothers and sisters of other religious traditions, in the steps of Father Abraham, who joins in one family Muslims, Jews and Christians.”

Yes, but the atrocities were terrible, such as one of my Chaldean students seeing one of Hussein's sons pick up a girl in the streets against her will, and nobody could do anything to stop him. This happened on a regular basis.

However, I agree that control of most of Iraq by ISIS was FAR worse.

Oh, I have no question that Saddam was a monster, but headed a secular government.
