Stimulus checks. Are other countries giving people stimulus checks

We Never Know

I know there are many here from other countries so I was just curious if the country you live in is giving out stimulus checks, bailout money, etc.
What is your country doing? Thanks in advance.

My country is a third-world one where many jobs barely pay a livable salary to begin with and poverty rates are through the roof. No stimulus checks here, and that's far down a lot of people's priority list given the plethora of issues the country has with infrastructure, health care, education, and employment, among other things.

A $1,200 stimulus check might not seem like much, but many of us who have experienced life in third-world countries with barely any social security find it quite significant for a state to do something like that for its citizens, even if there's ample room for improvement.

Sorry to hear that. I can only hope things get better in your country.

Not sure exactly, but those who couldn't earn during the lockdown times were to be provided with money, food and in some cases medical insurance as far as I know. It wasn't very successful, the government couldn't reach everyone nor provide enough.

It does raise the question if it's time for a universal income.
I like the idea and want to see detailed discussion.

For one thing, a mountain of bureaucracy disappears and thus money is freed up.

For another, it lets people decide what to do with the money just like those with jobs. One size does not fit all.

I wish there was a way to get it seriously considered. As it is, if the Democrats propose it, the other side would start yelling no no no without further thought.

Yes and no.
I see that as a band-aid at best. We are going to continue to lose jobs to technology. There is no avoiding this. We have to be ready for this so we don't hit a boiling point where so many jobs have been replaced that few paying jobs exist. A UBI can help to give us some leeway and time to figure out what comes next when technology has replaced industry.

So if everyone is paid a universal income of $2000 per month Bob now will make $4 million annually plus $2000 per month.
Where does this money come from?
If it were up to me those who export jobs would be targeted to help pay for they helped to bring about.
It would entirely depend on the bill at that point and what they would do.

Interesting. However it says "After receiving $500 per month for two years without rules on how to spend it, 125 people in California paid off debt, got full-time jobs and had “statistically significant improvements” in emotional health, according to a study released Wednesday."

125 doing better its great but I didn't see how many in total were involved in the program.

Google and you'll find UBI trials have been tried in a number of countries.

Where does this money come from?
Where does the massive funding for the military come from?

Haven't Alaskan millionaires have been getting checks from the permanent fund for nearly 40 years?
Alaska’s universal basic income problem

Fair? Maybe not. But this sort of thing is easily regulated, and can be tweaked as needed.

As for Alaska as of 2019, the fund was worth approximately $64 billion that has been funded by oil revenues and has paid out an average of approximately $1,600 annually per resident.

Alaska Permanent Fund.

The rest is why the US is $28 trillion in debt.

Alaskan residents received their income from oil in the state. My sister lives in Alaska. That's how I know this.
