What is your spirit animal?

A spirit animal at least in this thread is an animal which you have a strong connection with. This may be symbolically or with repeated encounters or where there is a special meaningful interaction or any combination. The animal can by real or mythical. What matters is that animal has a special meaning or connection to you.

I am sure there are those who know their spirit animal but if you do not here are some ways you may find your spirit animal.

1. Pay attention to recurrent appearances of a particular animal.

Are you noticing recurrent encounters with an animal, seeing symbols or pictures of a particular animal, or seeing even TV shows or movies where you notice a particular animal or hearing that animal in song?

2. Does an animal appear in you dreams, especially one that appears in many dreams?

You can also discover a spirit animal through an altered state of consciousness such as journeying or a vision quest.

3. Have you come across any animals with unusual behaviors that catch your attention? An animal that stares at you, comes up to you, or causes you to take notice. An animal

4. Meditate about an animal or any animal that you feel a longstanding connection with or one that you can just identify with.

You can find many descriptions on the internet linking the animal with meaning. These can be helpful but the most important is what you find as the meaning that is important to you. Understanding about the animal is also very helpful – where and how it lives in its environment. Special qualities in how that animal has adapted to its environment.

So what do I consider my spirit animal?

The animal I would call as my spirit animal is not what is depicted on my avatar picture the Fox. I do love foxes but I have never had any significant experiences with them or direct connections that I felt was Important. I have encountered many different animals but there has ben only one were I felt a close connection – the Raccoon - Arakun (Algonquin) – means he who scratches with man, wica (Lakota) - means little man, Raccoon (English) derived from Arakun and my favorite name vaskebjorn washer bear (Norwegian).

Due to outdoor cats and their food, it is not uncommon for animals to come to our back porch but where I live the animals are afraid of humans and leave immediately when they come in contact. One evening when I went out on the porch a raccoon was coming up the stairs and I expected it to leave immediately. To my surprise it walked right up to me and stared at me. The raccoon then took it’s time to enjoy some of the left-over cat food outdoors. When the raccoon was finished it settled down on a cushion of one of our outdoor chairs and curled up for a nap. Since that time we have had many meetings each so wonderful especially to see a wild animal feel comfortable enough to tolerate my presence. Yes, it comes for some food but all it has to do is wait and return when I am indoors and eat the food. Instead, this raccoon feels safe and comfortable with me and I realized this was my spirit animal.

You can up raccoon spirit animal on the internet and find something like this -

“The raccoon spirit animal is a problem solver. The raccoon offers lessons about the importance of adaptability in any situation and taking the time to look at the entire picture, not just what one wants to see. They quest for truth and solutions also have an insatiable curiosity about the world around them while possessing the wherewithal to know to look before they leap questioning without fear, balancing curiosity, shape shifting, and an element of secrecy.”

Or this

“This medicine helps us to take on and let go of the many roles we fill. Having various identities isn’t negative, for we can learn to become adept at changing identities when appropriate. Over time this becomes as easy as selecting and changing ones clothes. Your many faces are about to be revealed to you. The racoon will assist you how to mask, disguise and transform yourself. Masks are a powerful tool – through the use of masks, altered states can be reached. Racoon people generally do well in professions to do with theatre.”

But for me what have I learned from raccoons? – They have taught me tolerance for others, every night one raccoon always comes with an opossum. All of the raccoons have no problem sharing food with the other opossums, my cats or skunks. I do know they have been known to share dens with other animals like skunks. They also only seem to eat what they need leaving much behind. No individual as ever cleaned out the food, and seem to take only what they need (something many humans should learn from). They love washing everything in the water bowel and they love investigating everything on the porch. So these are some of many things I have learned from the Raccoons that visit every night.

Raccoons here have repeatedly stolen bird feeders and outdoor cat food dishes over the years. I believe that they drag them back to wherever they are holed up because "the magic feeders fill up with brand new food each day, so if we bring it home with us, we won't have to go out to find food..."

Imagine their surprise when they aren't magically refilled...ever...

A feral cat.

I mentioned years ago on another forum that I felt a cat was my spirit animal, but was told domestic animals didn't count. After some reflection, I still am stuck on that cat...

A cat really doesn't have to be domestic. It adapts to its surroundings, and acts the way it needs to in order to survive. It takes its pleasure off of the things that are there. It doesn't seek too far, typically(unless its hungry). It can play in the living room, or on the porch at the house on the next block. They are not so finicky as they are made out to be, nor as clean and fussy as reputed. They live in the moment, and they don't worry too far ahead.

As far as experiences with them, I seem to be able to talk to them. I remember my first experience with this was as a teen... I watched a feral cat run from me, and I meowed. It stopped, and ran back to me! I was shocked. Throughout my life, I seem to have a special bond with them... indeed, I have trouble keeping them away!

I was thinking the same animal. My cat and me are inseparable. Cept maybe feeding time. LOL.

I took a fun test to find my spirit animal and the results was a hippo. I've never encountered any hippo and givin the reputation, I hope I never do unless of course I was a hippo myself. What is amazing however was the explanation. It was rather uncannily accurate.

Hippo Symbolism & Meaning | Hippo Spirit, Totem, & Power Animal

I'm partial to crows/ravens though. Maybe it's because of the mystique associated with the bird. I find myself attracted to them.

According to the test I just took, I'm a tiger. Sounds pretty accurate. Actually, kind of flattering.

I could be a bear though. First off, I could sleep all winter without anybody thinking I was lazy for doing so. Secondly, people wouldn't question the fact that I can be mean and ornery at times. They'd realize it was just part of my nature. :D

You know, I'm not sure... I admire the intelligence and cunning of the raven. I admire the stubbornness and the ambition of the salmon. I also admire the thoughtfulness and keenness of senses that a deer possesses.

Maybe I just don't have one? I've never been able to settle on just one. :D

As far as spirit animals go, I have several: The first has always been the Wolf.
Ever since I was young I would dream of wolves, sometimes good dreams, sometimes bad. In fact I remember one dream in particular of being chased through the dark, and sanguine autumn woods, being relentlessly pursued by large black wolves. Upon them catching me, I quickly defended my self, and overcame the pack before waking.

The second animal I would consider my spirit animal is the Crow/Raven. One day while deep in thought and staring intently out the window, at the bush that was outside. A crow landed on the bush and we made eye co tact, and at that moment I was blessed with a unitive experience with this Crow, and felt known, but not judged.

Lastly, while I don't consider them my spirit animals, cats (I have 4) and my dog are very close to my heart, they are more like Familiars to me.

I find that I am very attuned to the Spirit world ;).

I relate to cats. Not sleek mysterious feral cats or powerful regal wildcats.
Nope. I relate to domestic housecats. Bouts of hysterical energy, but mostly prefers to be comatose. Can be friendly or aloof. Can be sweet or an ***. A little chubby, a little clumsy, but can surprise you by getting into where they shouldn't.

And domestic cats, wild cats small or big.

On a visit to Chester zoo before the kids were born a pride of new born lions were on their first outing into their enclosure. They rushed to be face to face with me and played as cats will right in front of me.

Several years later we took the kids for a visit. All but two of the pride had been shipped of elsewhere for the conservation/breeding program. Just one majestic lion and a sister remained but were nowhere to be seen. As my family and i huddled at the rail trying to spot the enclosures inhabitants the male broke cover, a magnificent mane pushed through the bushes. He loped over to where we were standing and gave me a good staring at. Then sister followed. They did seem pleases to see me but not as please as i, and the kids were overjoyed at that little intimacy with what is a wild animal. After a few moments he grunted, turned and they walked away side by side.

Now 10 years later it is still one of the experiences we recount on family evenings by the fire.

You can also discover a spirit animal through an altered state of consciousness such as journeying or a vision quest.

Quite a few years ago, I tried out a meditative exercise that was intended to let you connect with your spirit animal. I don't fully remember the details of how it was done, though there was nothing dramatic about it. Pretty much just clearing the mind of everything but the desire to meet your spirit animal. After some time, an animal did indeed appear in my mind.

I saw a chinchilla.

I know! I was honestly expecting to see a crow or a raven. Given that most people say their spirit animal is something associated with mystery or grace, I thought my mind would conjure something like that.

It was so out of character for how my mind works that it left me wondering if maybe there really was some outside force that I connected with. I guess that's impossible to prove or disprove though so I'll just say it was an interesting experience and leave others to come to their own conclusions.

I do like meerkats, but I don't approve of them selling car insurance in the UK. :p
But seriously, I relate to many animals, particularly the ones I see regularly on the coast. Seals and cormorants are among my favourites.

The horse.

In my adolescent years, I had a recurring dream of being a jockey aboard one of the racehorses in an all-out run. The dream was fun -- thrilling. I imagined that I must have been a jockey in a past life. At the real-life racetrack, I hung around the saddling area just to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells.

The animal that has the most impact on my life, and which I spend the most time thinking about, is in fact the fox. This is because it has been, over recent years, the animal that has caused me the most annoyance. I have a feeling this is not what you are after, though. ;)

The animal I am best friends with is the robin in the back garden - or its family: I can't tell individuals apart.

But I can't see any spiritual significance in the robin, whereas the fox seems to exhibit a conscious malevolence towards me that is at times a bit eerie.
