Printer issues

Okay. I know I asked this before somewhere but don't remember it being on a separate thread. I'll list the issues and what I did to resolve it. I'm not a computer geek so updating drivers and things of that nature, if I don't understand it 100% I don't feel comfortable trying it.

I have a HP Desk Jet and its only three or four months old. It worked with my lap top Intel but it took awhile to get it connected. For some reason the old lap top work but it's not working on this new computer. I only had it a couple days.

I've tried google (and all of that).

The printer is uploaded on my computer and says offline. When my internet is on, the printer shuts off.
I reload it, checked inside the printer, restart it (computer, wifi, and printer), and went online. I updated the drivers and spooler. I deleted the printer device from the computer and reload it.

I can't screen shot it since it's not a web page.

The blue tooth is on and it is discoverable
The computer picks up the printer and loaded under devices (weirdly enough, another printer is listed under other devices but that isn't the same one I'm trying to use)

Nothing is in the printer quere. It's the default printer.
I did troubleshoot but it said my printer worked fine (which it does).

The error it says the printer is offline because of a network connection. The internet and printer can't stay on at the same time.

I found another source about ports but like spooler and drives I'm not quite sure what that is so any deleting and uninstalling, I don't feel comfortable doing. I know I did other things but they're not on my head at the moment.. Both devices are new so it's mostly the network connection. It took awhile with my laptop as it had similar problems but it finally worked somehow. I'm not sure what I did but I did more on this computer than I did on the lap top, so I have no clue.

You need this cat to advise you [bad language alert]:

I'm guessing it's the wifi config that's causing this.

It can be a little complicated resolving the issue.

We need the network settings from your computer while on the internet.

Can you post the results to an 'ipconfig'?

To do that, click on your start button, then type "cmd" (no quotes) then enter. This will open a black command window with a blinking cursor. Next type "ipconfig" and press enter.

You should get something like this:

*mod edit*

I strongly advise against posting this on the public forum. Your IP, as you probably know, indicates the physical location/address of your house, so please don't post it in public.

I'm taking down the picture for the sake of privacy.

What do I do after that?

There was a mod edit. I'm assuming its a privacy thing. Is there another way you can explain what was deleted without sensitive information?

It was a picture that looked similar to this:

(I got this one from Google via this website, so it's not private.)

good thinking, though that wasn't a picture from my PC

Does your printer work properly if you plug it in your laptop? (Wired connection)

What do I do from there?

@Unveiled Artist, Take a look at the screenshot DebateSlayer provided; what's needed here is the IPv4 address and the Subnet Mask.

The idea is, your printer needs to have its wifi settings configured to agree with the settings your PC has currently. Most often, the printer will automatically obtain the settings it needs from your internet router. But when it doesn't do this, the settings can be configured manually on the printer. It's not a difficult process, but, it's a little different depending on the printer.

Then once the printer is configured with the correct wifi settings, the printer will probably need to be reinstalled on your PC.

If you want to try it, the next step is to choose an IP Address for the printer. It needs to be similar to the IP Address of the PC, but the last number needs to be different. The maximum number is 254, I usually pick a high number like 200. Using the example provided, the IP Address for the PC is 10.0.0.75, then I would choose 10.0.0.200 for the printer. Another common addressing scheme is 192.168.0.x. The PC is usually a low number (192.168.0.10), and I would choose 200 for the printer (192.168.0.200)

Once you have chosen an IP Address for the printer, take a look on HP's website or google search "How to manually configure wifi on HPDeskjet model ______________". As I said, it's not difficult, but is specific for each printer. You need to configure the printer with its IP Address, and with an identical Subnet Mask. Using the 10.0.0.x example, the printer's IP Address is 10.0.0.200, and the Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0.

After that, reinstall the printer drivers on your PC.

How do you choose an IP address?

If something goes wrong, what's the worst that can happen?

You use the IP Address of the PC, but change the last number so it's higher than the PC but also lower than 255.

Changing the wifi settings on the printer is low risk. If you share the printer with someone else, they might have trouble connecting if something goes wrong.

I suspect the printer may be tied the IP of your laptop. So when the printer looks for the laptop and can't find it shuts down. A feature so when your laptop shuts off your printer shuts down as well to save energy.

Can you try to have both your computer and laptop on at the same time? See if the printer remains on for the computer to access.

This is what's read.

Both lap top and computer are on. The laptop works on printer but it lags maybe 10 or so minutes. The pics are my new comp

I don't understand. Do I delete the computer from my lap top to see if it works? The laptop now says its offline. Then my new computer (np) says its ready then went to error.

Where do I find the IP? (I looked under about computer)

Isn't the IP address automatically assigned when the printer is logged in to the router? I sometimes have this problem and end up having to search for the IP address in the network settings of the printer, and then install the printer using the IP address. Sometimes it's easier to just plug the printer directly into the router with an ethernet cable.

Yes, usually the address is auto assigned.
