If abrahamic, there would need to be a strong spiritual awakening AND that awakening needs to be distinct enough to lead to one god(s) over others.
Every single religious person I've spoken with online, off-line, and so forth seem to express the same physiological and neurological (and maybe psychological) affects from their beliefs. So, if I were spiritually awakened by practice, belief, whatever, how would I know the difference without being familiar with the religion or physical (rather than mental) practice first?
So, it would have to be very profound that the abrahamic god "speaks for itself."

First off show proof they are a god, don't ask me what this proof would be, i don't know but an omni everything god should have the smarts to figure that one out and prove they are a god and not an advanced alien playing tricks.
That done, next explain his/her logic behind childhood leukemia, the anopheles mosquito, the marmot, why they have been hiding away while millions of were faithful worshippers killed fighting in his/her name.

I gave you an example that should have told you which god it was, though technically that would be sign that I was in heaven.

If god where to appear to solve all that, what nature would he appear in?
Is he like a ghost that would tape children on the head and they'd be cured?
A force of some sort that springs them alive?
Is he invisible and all children and adults miraculously become healthy?

It would be up to the god in question. If a god exists he would know how to manifest himself to cause belief.
