I'd like to ask all atheists of this board... do you consider this a legitimate activity?
Or do you think it is lying?
The Defense of the Gospel is usually called apologetics.
Defense of any opinion is legitimate.

You can hardly call that defense, then. What if no one is actively attacking or opposing it?
It's reasonable that people would want to explain their beliefs. In fact, it's rational and sensible in that respect.I'd like to ask all atheists of this board... do you consider this a legitimate activity?

If there weren't opposition then a field like apologetics wouldn't need to exist in the first place.
Everyone needs a hobby.I'd like to ask all atheists of this board... do you consider this a legitimate activity?
Why would it be lying?Or do you think it is lying?
I see apologetics also covering Christian discourse aimed at figuring out what the message of "the Gospel" actually is.The Defense of the Gospel is usually called apologetics.
Apologetics has risen to answer doubts about the theological concepts that a religion teaches. If no one opposed it there would be no need to defend it.Why do you feel there is opposition and the need for apologetics?

Just to step back a bit: it depends on what we mean by "legitimate."I'd like to ask all atheists of this board... do you consider this a legitimate activity?
Christianity is a proselytizing religion. Part of its ethos is to seek out people who don't accept it and engage with them. You can hardly call that defense, then.

I recently saw that standpoint in a debate. Why would it be lying?
I think it depends how apologetics are approached.I recently saw that standpoint in a debate.
An atheist called all apologetics from the Christian side flat out lying.
I think it is not, obviously.
But I wanted to ask the rest of the atheists here first.

It looks that way to me as well, but I don't fault people for playing, say, Warhammer 40K, so I'm not going to fault apologists for doing it.Not quite sure what you mean by "legitimate" in this context tbh....
If asked what I think of that activity, it is rather words like "pointless" and "waste of time" that come to mind.
Watching 2 theists quibble over scripture, to me, looks like 2 generals trying to fight a war with action figures.
