Sitting in the woods posting on my phone while it's hooked up to my solar charger.

I officially no longer have any need for civilization at all.

The set of solar panels that I'm currently using (the set in the picture) is one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VRBVLWB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_1oKaOqFsk9h2P

It's a really amazing set. Folds up to about the size of a very thin hardcover book so it's easy to fit in a pack.

For $17 after tax you can't beat it.

Last year I bought a set of the most highly rated/recommended solar panels on the internet, called Big Blue, for $65 or $70, and was going to buy another set because the single set wasn't meeting my needs, but on a (stinginess inspired) whim I decided to try this inexpensive set from LVLF Outdoor instead.

Turns out, near as I can tell, one of the $17 sets works at least as well if not better all by itself then the $70 set, so I bought two more.

This is in spite of the fact that the $70 set is rated at 28w while the $17 set is only rated for 21 w.

Just thought I'd share this in case anyone was planning on doing any camping this year, or if anybody wakes up one morning and realizes "hey you know what? I don't really need to live in a house after all. :D

Happy camping.

More information:

I was tempted, but it's currently out of stock.

Darn I I must have just gotten the last one. :p

Sorry about that.

Edit: hopefully they'll have more in by the time camping season begins.

Thanks for the info. That might come in very handy for my own interests in camping.

I probably won't leave civilization behind completely, but for short disconnects, having some portable power would be great.

Except, of course, for the technology which is part of the civilization and which has provided you with the tools to post here.
Yes but I have those now so civilization can be on its way.

Bye civilization! We had a good run but, yes, it's over now.

What? Yes that's right, I never really loved you I was just using you.

(Sheesh, Civilization can be so needy)

I also took a solar shower today: that's just the regular two and a half gallon water containers you can get at any grocery store, left in the sun for an hour or two, and then stuck up in a tree with a stick through the handle so you can tip it towards you as needed.

I would have rather have used the river but according to the water quality report it's full of chemicals that I couldn't even begin to pronounce.

My only worry is even solar panels have a limited lifespan.

The concern lays with the coporate practice of planned obsolescence where people pay a much higher price for something that may not give a person their money's worth and end up getting systematically ripped off very badly once it fails by design.

It's a great way to go on the independent route and hope it serves many years after breaking even on costs.

Just felt that a buyer beware note would be necessary in view of todays rampant out of control greed stops me from getting solar panels myself.

Probably a self build might prove more resilient and long lasting for decades to come without having the corporations make something fail by design at your expense.

Yeah, sorry about that. I didn't realize they were out of stock until after I created this thread.

I'm not worried about getting my money's worth out of these. I bought the first two at the beginning of last fall, used them dozens of times for extended periods, and when I pulled them out a few days ago they were still working just fine.

It would be hard to calculate how much they're saving me in terms of the cost of electricity, but even if I had to replace them every year I'd still feel like I was ahead of the game.
