Suffering

In another thread, it was suggested that suffering is a result of past sins. While I have no concept of "sin" in my worldview, I see suffering as a result of attachment and desire.

In your view, from where does suffering come?

I don't know...I think so far it seems to just be a fact of life and I couldn't tell you why some suffer and others don't.

Life. We all suffer. To think one can live a life free from suffering is folly. Even the self-realised suffer, albeit theirs will be purely physical, as the emotions have been detached. So emotional attachment does compound it, but detachment can't eliminate it.

It is something trap-like. Perhaps you might have a theological tool to deal with pain suffering (like meditation perhaps?) , but it would be better to evade it slickly , rather than to don armor and wade through it. Yet who can evade it that totally

I believe that suffering comes from fallen nature of humankind and of planet Earth

When humans lived in a state of nature as God's pets in paradise there was no suffering

But after the fall (in which Adam and Eve decided to go their own way) God gave them what they wanted and set the difficulty settings from "novice" to "realistic" and suffering began as a fact of life

So natural evil occurred as well as human evil

That's what my religion teaches, anyway :D

There are a lot of sources.

No attitude is going to help reduce or prevent suffering if you fall into the hands of someone who takes pleasure in hurting you.

Won't help with dengue, either.

Suffering is the result of having a nervous system.

I make a distinction between pain (which I have this morning) and suffering. Pain (physical or emotional) is inevitable. Pain is just an object in my consciousness. Suffering is a reaction to that object. It's how one reacts to the pain that causes suffering.

The Buddhist parable of the two arrows sort of sums this up.

Laziness and stupidity. If I had tidied up my room or remembered where I put that damn box, I wouldn't have stubbed my toe.

I suffered a lot, still do, when Mom died.
I've no interest in being so detached as not to
care.

I don't see detachment as lack of care. Once can still care, but not remain attached to the point where one identifies someone's death as a part of themselves.

I suffered when my daughter died. A lot. I was attached. Very attached. Once I broke that attachment, I broke free of the suffering. Does this mean I don't care? No. Does this mean I don't feel pain when I think about it? No. I just don't attach myself to these emotions.

Pretty much this. Craving is the root of suffering.

I heard somewhere......suffering is what you allow
that you suffer because of someone else
that you suffer circumstance you created

but I also hear the word .......grace
used in the same way
