The End of Trump

I think this is a tragic, yet fitting end to America's worst president in its history. All his right-wing militia supporters, from Proud Boys, to America First, to the Oath Keepers, are all now calling him "very weak and flaccid", a "total failure", "surrendering", unpatriotic and such. They are abandoning him and the G.O.P. ‘A Total Failure’: The Proud Boys Now Mock Trump

This video ad from the Lincoln Project aptly summarizes the Trump legacy he has left America with. It should add "Never Forget" to it. I hope his horrible legacy will stand as a warning to the future.

Now, America begins to rebuild.

Nobody likes a loser.

I suspect more so in politics than anywhere else. Folks like that want to ride the coattails of success. Doesn't matter how you succeed only that you do.

But there are some "republicans" who still believe or something. They want to primary Liz Cheney for daring to vote her beliefs. And they are throwing shade on Garth Brooks for performing at Biden's inauguration.

Maybe they're just trying to pander to those who don't care any more, maybe they're just being utterly cynical or maybe they really are utter authoritarians but they're still waving their dark banners.

That I can understand from psychology POV

Narcissists are known to be unable to admit they were wrong
Even if the whole world tells them they are wrong with proof, they still won't admit
Admitting to be wrong feels they are failures and their youth trauma can't handle this

I'd actually like to think that they instead saw all the opposition to their ideas, and the fact that the country was going to bring defense/force/consequences to bear in order to keep them from achieving their goals, and that it scared the crap out of them. Hence making them (by their standards) the "very weak and flaccid", "surrendering" types along with Trump.

Easier to blame their lack of action on Trump "failing" than it is to admit that they ended up not having the balls to act.

That's a really good point. They are projecting their own fears and sins of themselves upon others, like Donald did every time he accused another of something, like "stealing the election", when that we his doing all along.

"You won't have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore."

I'll pronounce Trump politically dead when there is six feet of earth between his dead body and the nearest access point to a social media platform of any kind.

As it happens, there is actually a body of science that's relevant here. I'm surprised it has never been much reported on during the past 4 years because it's large and revealing, having come out of research begun in the late 40s or early 50s on Hitler's followers.

Enough said, here's the key fact: Trump's followers are leaving him (for now) for exactly the reasons they say they are. They currently see him as "defeated". That's the weight of the research. The consensus opinion.

Specifically, people who follow authoritarian leaders like Trump, and who behave like Trump's followers did, will abandon their leader in only one circumstance. Only one. He must be seen to have been defeated.

He can do anything else in the world and they will stick with him, but he must not seen by them to have been defeated.

Even then, you'll have some who 'cling to the past.'

A short, but solid introduction to the science on this is Robert Altemeyer's "The Authoritarians", which is available online for free.

One of the most interesting set of statistics was left out of the video, Windwalker, and might never be really known beyond a rough guess.

Trump's four balance sheets and his four profit and loss statements from the years he was in business as president of the United States. The pardons alone were sold for millions. And apparently he also expanded at some point into selling state secrets -- that is classified information. Then, there were the objects he stole from the White House, including the bust of Lincoln. Add to those things so much besides.
