How Will You be Celebrating MLK Day..?

I was just wondering if anyone would be preparing traditional African-American dishes this weekend in celebration of MLK day. Personally, I was thinking of just that, as well thinking about planning a mini-holiday trip, to do something, but I haven't figured it out yet.

...Anyone have anything planned, or some ideas on how you plan on spending your MLK weekend?

<FUN FACT>

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist minister from Atlanta, GA. He skipped both the ninth and eleventh grades, and entered Morehouse College in Atlanta at age 15, in 1944.

Although his family was deeply involved in the church and worship, King questioned religion in general and felt uncomfortable with overly emotional displays of religious worship. This discomfort continued through much of his adolescence, initially leading him to decide against entering the ministry, much to his father's dismay.

But in his junior year, King took a Bible class, renewed his faith and began to envision a career in the ministry

When I think of Martin Luther King I don't much feel like celebrating. It's heartbreaking that we created a society that so abused people for the color of their skin that he had to stand up and struggle so mightily and for so long just to try and get Americans to treat each other like human beings. And that he and everyone who stood up with him had to endure constant humiliation and violent attacks, and imprisonment, and eventually even being murdered. All for daring to point out that we human beings are all equal in the eyes of God, and that the color of a person's skin does not dictate the content of his character. These are not things I feel celebratory about.

Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles,

This combination never ceases to amaze me. WTF is its appeal?

It's like going to McDonalds and ordering a Big Mac meal and a McFlurry for dessert then thinking "actually, just wap the McFlurry on top on the burger and fries, will save a bit of time eating them together".

To meet black people and get myself invited to dinner I'd need to take the charisma online course three times in a row. It would be a challenge. I'm very unfriendly. Even when I try it goes wrong.

I've never heard of a sad holiday before. That's a little...Different.

I'm going to be mindful of the "promised land" he saw and for which many of us strive to see realized.

I don't celebrate the deaths of soldiers in our many wars, either, for the same reason.

I wonder what the African American community prefers... A dark and gloomy MLK day, or a more light hearted, more celebratory one.

...Or perhaps it's just up to me to decide for myself... I mean, it's my holiday too, since I'm off work.

I choose a happy day. :)

I think it's the combination of saltiness and sweetness. It's a flavor hybrid that is surprisingly pleasant in a variety of dishes, despite initially seeming odd.

Kind of like in the fall, when it's cool, driving with the heat on full blast and the windows down. Another kind of hybrid.

Of course, one reason I might be taking on a more celebratory tone this weekend, is because the weather is like summer right now in California, It's going to be in the mid 80's out today... It feels like summer... So a barbecue sounds like a good idea. :)

This is how I think MLK day ought to be celebrated ... I think even he would be honored by this.

I expect it's up to each of us, depending on how we feel about the whole phenomenon of MLK. I know quite a few people who deeply resent the holiday. They think it's totally undeserved. Some because they resent most holidays and political honors, and some because they are just racist.

What about some fried chicken, waffles and watermelon, some of the reverend's preferred foods?

The chicken and waffles is fine, as it's an actual African-American dish.

...The watermelon part isn't actually a favorite in the AA community. Never really was, so I could see how assigning watermelon to blacks as a traditional favorite would be unfair... Because it's not actually true.
