There has been an argument made that this impeachment will only serve to deepen the divide within the country. I'm skeptical of this argument. Rather, I believe that a failure to impeach Trump for his part in inciting the Capitol riot would deepen the divide we see. Inciting insurrection against the US Capitol should not be a partisan issue--acknowledging this can be a small step towards lessening this political divide, imo.

There really isn't time for a trial in the Senate. I'm hoping that there is an option for the Senate to refer the trial out to the courts. A Senate trial will probably deepen the political divide--it needs to be a non-partisan trial to avoid further political division, hence my wish for a court trial.

It seems to me the tumour must now be cut out. People talk of "the political divide" as if it is just one of those things that happens to be there and is a fact of nature. But that's false: it has been cranked open, systematically, by the actions of one man. That man has to be neutralised if the Republic is to survive. Once he is out of the running, politically, then one can talk about healing divides, but until then the cancer will grow.

I don't see a way to heal (or deepen) the divide outside of sending the Trumpists to therapy. You can't compromise with someone who rejects reality and is not willing to compromise. The divide is between sane and delusional, it can't be healed by politics. All you can hope for is that the delusion is temporary.

I think there are some things you can do. You can cut off the sources of false information (social media legislation). You can make it less respectable to air mad opinions, by no longer giving them political credence. You can adopt political policies that address some of the grievances that attract people to false narratives. And you can reiterate the falsity of those narratives at every turn.

But this may only be possible if the Republican party decides it is going to repudiate the politics of lies and conspiracies that have brought the country to this state. That is the inflexion point we seem, at last, to be reaching.

Yes they want us divided. They tried to create division with all the BLM riots but they had a very hard time getting Americans to fight each other. So now all this election fraud etc. They're stepping up the division chaos plan. I think they want to take our guns and impose some kind of martial law. Anyone engaging in civil war, or just riots in general are playing into their hands.

Why would they want our guns? Power, control of course.

Trump is toxic. He has a strange attraction for some people and he brings out the worst in them. To heal we need to get rid of the cause of the rift first. Trump needs to be convicted and barred from politics.

And the Republicans should not feel sorry for him. He had plenty of chances to resign. He could have kept a little honor and have resigned.

Who are "they"? Washington paedos? Bill Gates? Lizard people from outta space?

And what "election fraud" is this? Trump has lost 60 court cases trying to prove any such thing, nearly all being thrown out summarily for lack of any evidence. Why are you anxious to believe obvious, barefaced lies?

This is the sort of nonsense that Trump causes.

Why did you bring up the false claims of election fraud? That was Trump's lie and it eventually led to his impeachment.

I agree with you that we have to overcome delusion. Focusing on going after Truth instead of going after Victory is the key, imo.

You're both triggered about "election fraud" I see. And that's my point. They want everyone triggered.

I already believe all elections are fraudulent and controlled no matter who "wins".
Actually ... I wasn't saying the election was fraud anyway.

I'm talking about the narrative to create division and chaos.

First the narrative was allegations of Russia fixing the 2016 election. Now it's that the democrats who fixed the 2020 election. The point is to create division and hatred.

Nothing is going to bridge the divide with pro-life and voters who believe the world is ending soon, however everyone else will probably be either noncommittal or relieved. It can't make the divide worse.

Not so much as how do I see any court action but generally speaking, any action against the President of which half the nation supported will only cement in most of them that it is just a continuation of 4 years of attack and it will alienate them more.

It is amazing to me that the GOP, the party which has been dividing the country at every opportunity for the last 4-years, is suddenly interested in bringing the country together.

Hypocrites

So, the DEM has been trying to unite the country at every opportunity in the last 4 -years?

I always object to people who repeat obvious lies. If you want to dismiss my objection in pejorative terms as being "triggered", I can't stop you, poisonous though your implication may be.

And yes you did say there was election fraud. Which there wasn't. It was certified as the most secure ever, and all the legal challenges were thrown out summarily. Do you claim the judges are part of your conspiracy, too?

And again, who are "they"? The only person claiming the Democrats "fixed" the 2020 election is Donald Trump.

Arguing that impeachment would be divisive is a lot like a domestic abuser saying "if you call the police, you'll be tearing this family apart."

(Not my line originally, but I agree with it)

We are " triggered" by your falling for obvious lies. It is time to grow up a bit. Just because your side lost does not mean that elections are rigged. And the sort of lies that you believe are the cause of immoral fools trying to overthrow our government. Right now you may be a threat to the rights of others.
