My Theory: Trump Resigns in exchange for, Pence Pardons

I suppose anything is possible, but there's only 13 more days left. Either way, it's going to anger one or the other side. If Trump is ultimately arrested, somehow confined, and put on trial, I expect there could be a response from the hoi polloi. I'm not saying he shouldn't pay for his crimes, but that is a serious risk in pursing that course of action.

Trump would never do that. Instead, he's been clipped. He has no more capital left on the hill. He spent it all in one final spree yesterday at his incite a mob to storm the capitol rally.

There's only 7 business days left to his time in office during those 13 days till the 20th. What should, and probably will happen, is he'll fly off down to Mar A Lago, and go out doing what he's done most of his time in office, playing golf. He's finished politically.

That's not enough for Trump. He needs not only Pence's pardon, he needs a general pardon from all Governors also (or at the very least from Cuomo). He may threaten to repeat the yesterday stunt to get that pardon.

I doubt it after trump threw Pence under the bus leaving him potentially at physical risk from the rioters who were looking for him by name.
Yep, I just don't see Pence doing that. Unless he truly believed it would be better for the country. He clearly is not about to do anything for Trump. One positive sign for Trump is that Pence was not even taking Pelosi's calls when she was interested in seeing if he was willing to go the 25th Amendment route.

Well we don't want to take away all of the fun of the end of Trump's ill fated reign:D

Trump might well try to pardon himself which would give everyone a great sideshow as the legal battles unfold over this.

I'm not betting against the Nixon-Ford scenario.
That would probably be the optimum solution for everyone. I would like for Trump to face justice for the crimes that he did as President, but it would heal the country more if he was persuaded to resign. If a pardon for his recent activities was part of the deal I could accept it.

As I said above, that's not enough for Trump. He'd go to prison for his crimes committed before the presidency and no presidential pardon would save him from that.
The "optimum" solution from a pure utilitaristic point of view would be if Trump fled the country.

Nothing done at the federal level protects Trump from the various states that are set to punish him for deeds done before he was President. I think that Trump did not want to lose because there are all of these lawsuits waiting for him. Just in case you did not know a sitting President cannot be charged with state level crimes. So if he say cheated the state of New York on various income taxes they could not prosecute him until his term was over. Last time I checked that is noon EST on January 20th. Even if Pence wanted to pardon him he cannot pardon him for those crimes either. A President can only pardon federal crimes.

Yep. That's exactly why I said that a pardon from Pence or Biden isn't enough for Trump. He goes to prison anyway.
His optimal solution options are 1. a coup (he botched that one) 2. a general pardon for all his crimes, federal and state (good luck negotiating that one) 3. a very, very long holiday in a country without an extradition agreement with the US (rumours say he plans to travel on inauguration day).
