Enlightenment, I don't get it

How do you know that?
As a follower of non-dual Hinduism I believe it to be the insight of those saints/sages/mystics/clairvoyants/whatever that have plumbed the deepest into the nature of consciousness. One rishi I respect says do not take my word for it but investigate yourself and find the truth.

As I am not likely to meditate and reach that level of consciousness any time soon I respect what they say as the most reasonable and advanced teachings I have heard. No other philosophy to my reason can make better sense of reality.

If it means "losing my ego", then I don't want it. Why would I want to do that? It seems to be a bizarre desire. Who doesn't want to be themself, and why?
You will not be losing anything. You are to see things as they really are. When one understands all sides, Intelligence will pick the Best choices. Enlighten yourself about all things not just religion. There is much to Discover in every field of learning.

Listen to the advice of others but walk your own path. Life's lessons are best learned this way.

That's what I see. It's very clear!!

I am forced to both disagree and to take offense at the unsubstantiated suggestion that it is possible to allow others to be wrong on the internet. Madness! Besides, 'anonymous' forgot to define what they meant by 'internet'.
Only ascended masters can nod knowingly at the ignorant on the internet. The rest of us cheat and use the ignore list and act as if we have arrived.

The weird thing is that I am EXTREMELY attracted to religion, spirituality, yoga, meditation, esoteric knowledge, the list goes on. There must be a reason. And I avoid all spiritual experiences, I don't know why the attraction.
This is confusing to me. When you say you are attracted to things like yoga and meditation, do you mean as concepts, or in the sense that you practice them? If you practice them, then what are you hoping to gain from them?

I remember going to my ex's house, years ago, shortly after I'd left him(I was picking up some things). He was living in his dad's house, and when I came in, he exclaimed very excitedly that he'd become an internet guru. He was so pleased with this, he didn't seem to notice that, while he had on a very nice fedora, the only other article of clothing he had on was his boxers.

It seems the ascended masters of the internet have a dress code they don't tell the common public about.

Are you sure that Enlightenment is the same as sanity, mental health? When almost all of us were infants we had to adopt a false self in order to survive. That false self, called an ego, lives in fear, we don't feel that fear, most people cover it up with addictions. Fear is at the base of our ego. So many people live with basically 2 emotions: lust and anger. The media industry gets a "hay day" form this. It drives our economy. Why anger? Because the natural process is fear turning to anger. Our fear generates anger. Watch a dog and you'll see this. The choice is yours, either live your life in fear and anger, and enjoy the lust and endure the suffering or get healed. Try to remember, the greatest stumbling blocks to reach healing are shame and guilt.

I have no ego but I do love waffles.

I don't even know what to do with an ego.

I am a self though! It's a good distinguishment.

It's about "Master your Ego" ... "don't let your ego Master you"

Enlightenment is an exercise in letting go of all attachments and conceptions. When you have done that your true self emerges. The idea, I think, is to find humility.

The letting go process can take a moment, or a lifetime. See what comes back to you.

If you are happy with who you are, you don't have to seek enlightenment. Usually it's a journey taken by people who are unhappy in some way with what they currently see themselves to be.

Fair enough, no problem, take it easy.

Why would I want to do that? It seems to be a bizarre desire. Who doesn't want to be themself, and why?
You mean their false illusory self-image.

WHO: Those who have reached the state of vairAgya. Please study this term. vairAgya: sort of an indifference, disinterest, renunciation,,, English words cannot do justice to the term. One who has reached vairAgya knows what it is but of course there are degrees. Like extreme = teevra vairAgya.

After the dip in the vairAgya lake, you may emerge as if you are in the world but not OF the world.
It is not an achievement. It is a state.

WHY: a) Because of VairAgya OR b) Your experience of ParaBrahman' (God , Gott --- derived from Germanic Gotham --- which came from sanskrit gUdha -- deep mystery)
OR
c) you have intellectually understood who the real One is - within.

karma-yoga and bhakti-vibhakti-yoga are the 2 wings, and jnAna is the tail - propeller

Until or as long as such a stage has not developed, studying scripture, curiosity, developing understanding, meditation, prayer, being a good person, introspection, is all good - none of which goes waste. It is all towards evolution of the soul.

-----

The one who lost the attachment and interest can still function in the world but everything they do is because that is what feels right, or it is for others. They do care about others, but no hankering for any self-image. As for within themselves, they are AtmArAm - self-satisfied, ever blissful.

They see the One is all there is. They identify with the One.

Yoga and meditation practice. It just feels good. Makes me extremely calm. But I quit when I started having spiritual experiences.

What would you loose if you become more unselfish, compassionate? Less self-centered, unchained from ego-desires...
