In a sense, especially when one thinks beyond the dry, literal meaning of "alive." That which is alive is dynamic - full of change and drama, creation and destruction, constantly in motion, ever changing and transforming. The universe is certainly that.

No. You would have to redefine the word alive to fit the entire universe.

It's not so easy to know... How do we know there aren't galaxies inside individual atoms, with little planets and little tiny people, who are actually living as part of a cell of an animal.

Likewise, how do we know we're not just like those tiny people on a different scale..?

"physicists now know that atoms are not solid little balls. It’s better to think of them as tiny electrical, “planetary” systems. They’re typically made up of three main parts: protons, neutrons and electrons. Think of the protons and neutrons as together forming a “sun”, or nucleus, at the centre of the system. The electrons orbit this nucleus, like planets."

How do we know that things are really made of atoms?

If by “alive” you mean animate, not dead, and ever-changing, then yes, it is alive.
