Ye are the light of the world

Matthew 5:14-16
King James Version
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

How do you see the meaning of the above? I believe he is talking about the light of consciousness.

Hm. I read it as you have the ability to spread 'light' (joy, comfort, relief). Its not natural to keep it hidden(according to the verse, as I read it).

By you spreading joy in the world, you show the essence of God. (I think.)

You know, there's a children's song about this verse titled "This little light of mine." That's the understanding I have about the verse growing up in the church.

If I were to look at it outside the christian framing and context, I like the interpretation @JustGeorge draws. :D

Matthew 5:14-16 it would be Jesus' followers who are the ' *light* of the world '. They follow in Jesus' footsteps, so to speak - John 8:12; John 12:36
Their *light* would shine before men by following Jesus' instructions as found at Matthew 24:14; Acts 1:8
To always walk as children of *light* - Ephesians 5:8; Philippians 2:15 - the spiritual *light* as found throughout the pages of Scripture.
To proclaim the good news *light* about God's kingdom ( Daniel 2:44) throughout the world just as it is being done internationally today.
For the fruitage of *light* consists of: every sort of goodness and righteousness and truth - Ephesians 5:9
The religious truth as found in Scripture - John 17:17
Such spiritual truth is the *light* that glorifies God by proving one's self to be a follower of Jesus' teachings - John 15:8

It gets worse...
Psalms 82:6 is Jesus' reference to human judges referenced as 'gods' because they were to judge by using God's righteous standards in which to judge.
This is also why Moses was told to serve as 'god' to Aaron and Egypt's Pharaoh .- Exodus 4:16 B

I don't see him limiting it to a select cast, but if that is your argument.
