I'm a teetotaller and while I like nightclubs, it's not a big thing for me. So I'm thinking about taking up shisha and hookah smoking because, unlike alcohol, my mind is conscious and in control.

What are the health hazards in this ? I was told that 4 puffs is equivalent to a cigarette ? What makes it better than cigarettes?

If it's haraam in Islam then why is it found in Muslim countries?

Well, not everything found in Muslim countries is halal.

As far as I know, there are two different arguments (with two different conclusions) made when it comes to things like shisha, cigarette, etc.

Argument 1
A) Everything is halal, unless scripture (Quran & hadith) make it haram.
B) There is no mention of cigarettes/shisha etc. in the Quran and the hadith; they didn't exist back then.
___ therefore, they are halal.

Argument 2
A) Everything that harms the body and soul (of yourself or another person) is haram. There is a hadith that says, "You should not harm yourself or others" La dharar wa la dhiraar.
B) Cigarettes, shisha, etc. harm the smoker (and possibly, others).
___ therefore, they are haraam.

I would say, it's better to go for camomile tea. It is definitely halal.

I wondered the same as @ronki23 regarding Judaism.

Many decades ago, I was in Jerusalem and went into a Yeshiva(Jewish religious seminary) and noticed that there were a large number of people smoking.
So, I approached one the people there and asked why smoking is allowed since it is known to be detrimental to health and shorten one's life(which is against Jewish Law).

The answer I got (and used for many years to justify my own smoking:() was that when they smoke they are releasing divine sparks which are trapped in the tobacco., into the world.

If you are already a teetotaller and do not smoke, why start?
It is quite easy to get the smoking habit, from 'just trying it out' as I did at the age of 13,

You can go nightclubbing without either.

all those hookah blends I have seen contain sugar, which is really not advisable to smoke
organic tobacco is best if one wishes to partake
Traditional tobacco is of the rustica variety which is more fragrant/pungent
mapacho is the term for it
it gets really sticky with resin when in full bloom

an option to look into is powdered tobacco called Hape' [rape' pronounced ha-pe]
which is the traditional shamanic snuff which is insufflated [blown up the nose]

Shisha is a social activity and presumably better than cigarette smoking
