Not recognizing the divine

So what does society need to change about itself and its rule such that when the next manifestation of God or the divine comes, that religious history isn't repeated with people mocking, abusing, imprisoning, or even killing the manifestation of the divine?

People have to not let their ego get in their way to see the truth in the teaching.
To learn that the physical world is only 1% of what actually is the truth about our experience.

If a society is fully able to recognize a messianic figure when it sees one, would it still need one?

I think we have reached a high degree of religious tolerance that I doubt it can/will happen.

Apparently I have embarrassed you, which wasn't my intention. I was just pointing out everything is of the divine.

Why? You didn't fall from the sky out of an alternate reality. Everything is sacred, including you.

I agree that everything is sacred, so much so that good energies and bad energies will sometimes fight each other to try to have that person's loyalty. In my opinion.

But I still think I'm almost unworthy of even kissing someone like Bahaullah's ring, and I'm not even a Baha'i.

Between the two there is harmony. You can't have one without the other. "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"

I think you may like this poem by Kabir:
Between the poles of the conscious and the unconscious, there has the mind made a swing:
Thereon hang all beings and all worlds, and that swing never ceases its sway.
Millions of beings are there: the sun and the moon in their courses are there:
Millions of ages pass, and the swing goes on.
All swing! the sky and the earth and the air and the water; and the Lord Himself taking form:
And the sight of this has made Kabîr a servant
