Do you think they are a good idea?

Keeping raccoons...foxes...pigs...boars...as pets?

I think it is not that bad. Any animal can be domesticated.:)

I knew a couple of ferret owners.

One had a chimp in the 70s but after I read about the dangers associated with a number of them I cant help but wonder why in the world would people want exotic pets for which I think some are dangerous as hell to keep.

I do agree.:clapping:
Not all wild animals are the same.
Foxes are more manageable...but savanna felines like lions are really really dangerous.

I'm generally against, given that people will have them and be ignorant or dismissive of the needs - that already happens wih cats and dogs. And not all species can be domesticated. And of course some animals are very dangerous to humans.

No!

You're conflating domestication with taming.

Domestication happens through selective breeding. Bringing a wild animal into your home and taming through conditioning is not the same thing as domesticating.

Domesticated animals, explained

That said, unless one has a thorough understanding of the process in conditioning and taming a wild animal, I would advise against bringing a wild animal into your home. Ultimately instincts take over, and the act of conditioning can easily turn into animal abuse if one is not knowledgeable of the taming process.

Bringing a wild animal into your home as a "pet" can be dangerous, both to you and the animal.

There are a few issues with exotic pets:

1. Legality:

Some animals are flat out illegal to own or import if you aren't running a zoo. Others require specific licenses before you can keep them. In the UK for example, you would need a Dangerous Wild Animal license before you can legally own a spitting cobra. The vast majority of people just aren't going to be approved for that license. There are also licensing requirements for keeping grey squirrels as they're considered an invasive species.

2. Proper care:

A lot of exotic pets require a great deal of space which most people won't be able to provide. They're also likely to have dietary and health needs that won't easily be covered by the majority of pet shops, supermarkets and veterinarians. Unless you really know what you're doing, exotic pets probably won't have a long, healthy life.

3. Danger:

Some animals present an obvious danger to the owner and members of the public if they aren't properly contained. Big cats, certain snakes, bears and so on. Others can be equally dangerous due to diseases they might carry. Marmots look like they'd make a cute pet but unfortunately they're plague carriers. You also have to consider the potential danger animals might present to an ecosystem. Grey squirrels in the UK and cane toads in Australia are famous examples of an invasive species multiplying beyond control.

4. Exotic pet trade:

There's a black market for exotic pets and it may not always be clear to the average buyer just how much damage it can do. Slow lorises are one example of an animal that's frequently targeted by exotic pet traders. Not only does this threaten wild populations, the slow lorises also have their teeth clipped or pulled out before being sold. As cute as they are, their bite is toxic and so they're really not appropriate pets.

So, to sum it all up, you can have exotic pets but the overwhelming majority of people just aren't in a position to keep them.

I do agree with you:).

My point is that not all wild animals are the same...
Raccoons have a nature which is pretty compatible with domestic life.
Au contraire...cougars or big lizards...are not apt at all.

I love raccoons...
Especially because they are not as picky as cats
They are omnivores.:)
But as pets -- unless you want your house destroyed -- they're hopeless. They're into everything, and dexterous enough to access everything. :(
